Lady Eagles improve to 12-6

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles had a very busy weekend, as they competed in the Rivercrest tournament. The Lady Eagles were looking to add to an already impressive start to this season.

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a game against Honey Grove Thursday. The game opened with a very tight first quarter, in which the Lady Eagles found themselves trailing by just one point.

Como-Pickton kept things close throughout the second and third quarters, trailing just 27-24 entering the final frame. Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, Honey Grove took their game to another level in the fourth quarter, outscoring Como-Pickton by 10 points to go on to win by a final score of 42-29.

Kara Tifft was the leading scorer for the Lady Eagles, scoring 11 points while also grabbing four rebounds. Behind her was Addi Monk who had seven points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists, in a well-rounded game. 

Mattison Buster had four points, two rebounds and two steals, while Chelsey Osborne and Maggie Brown each had three points. Brown also had two boards and a pair of steals. Cali Morris scored one point and pulled in one rebound for the Lady Eagles.

Como-Pickton continued their weekend the next day, with a pair of games against Liberty-Eylau and Detroit. The Lady Eagles got off to a strong start against Liberty-Eylau, matching them every step of the way in the first half. After another tight quarter to open the second half, Como-Pickton dominated the final frame, cruising to a 41-29 win. 

Monk and Morris led the way this time, each scoring 11 points. Monk also had six rebounds and two assists, while Morris had four rebounds and two assists. Buster was next with eight points, to go along with four boards and a pair of assists. 

Tifft, Sanay Diaz and Bella Romero each had three points, with Tifft also having four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Diaz had a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals as well. 

The Lady Eagles took that momentum into their second game of the day, this time getting out to a quick 16-6 lead against Detroit. They continued to dominate in the second frame, posting a 20-point second quarter and extending their lead to 36-17.

While Detroit was able to pick up their offense a bit in the second half, Como-Pickton continued to score in bunches as well, never letting Detroit gain any ground. The Lady Eagles were outscored in the third quarter, but answered back with a huge fourth quarter in route to a 65-41 win.

Tifft and Morris had huge scoring days in the way, finishing with 19 points and 17 points respectively. Tifft also had three steals and two rebounds, while Morris had three rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Also finishing in double-digits was Brown, who had 10 points, three steals and two assists. Monk had a strong outing as well, racking up seven points and seven rebounds. 

Buster had three points, five rebounds and two assists, while Lauren Lewellen had three points and one rebound. Romero posted two points and two assists, while Annie Franklin had one point and one rebound.

The Lady Eagles wrapped up their weekend with one final game against Commerce Saturday. The game started with a very low scoring first half, after Como-Pickton managed to score just one point in the opening frame. 

Trailing 10-9 entering the second half, both teams picked up their offense in the third quarter. Tifft gave Como-Pickton their first lead early in the second half, knocking down a 3-pointer to go ahead 12-10. 


A few minutes later Monk got a 3-pointer of her own to fall, pushing the lead to 17-12. The Lady Eagles did their best to stay ahead, but a high scoring fourth quarter saw Commerce take the lead, pulling out a very close 33-31 win.

Tifft once again led the way, scoring nine points, while also swiping a pair of steals. Behind her was Monk who had seven points and four rebounds.

Morris have five points, as well as a pair of rebounds, while Osborne had four points, three rebounds and two steals. Brown and Buster had three points each, while Brown also had a game-high four steals.

After going 2-2 on the weekend the Lady Eagles walk away with a record of 12-6. They are back in action Tuesday with a road match against Hawkins.
