Lady Cats End Regular Season with 19-0 Blowout, Finish District Play Undefeated
  • PublishedApril 19, 2023

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats traveled to Liberty-Eylau Tuesday night, for their final regular season game of the season. Still undefeated in district play and with the district title already clinched, the Lady Cats were looking to complete their undefeated district run and enter the postseason with as much momentum as possible.

Jadyn Harper got the offense rolling for Sulphur Springs, hitting a one-out single in the top of the first to give the Lady Cats their first hit. After stealing second, Harper came in to score on a ground ball hit by Reese Ragan, quickly giving Sulphur Springs a 1-0 lead.

The first inning offense didn’t stop there, however, as the Lady Cats would go on to score another pair of runs on singles from Crimson Bryant, Bayler Boatman and Gracie Adair. Now working with a three-run lead, Bryant took the circle for the Lady Cats.

Bryant had yet another amazing start, picking up a pair of strikeouts in the first frame. She did allow her first runner what would be her only runner of the night on a hit-by-pitch, but the runner would be thrown out trying to steal, keeping Bryant at the minimum.

In the top of the second the Lady Cats broke the game wide open, having one of their best innings of the season. After the first two batters of the inning reached on an error and a walk, Harper drove the pair in with a double. She would later come in to score on a double from Boatman, pushing the Lady Cats lead to 7-0.

The frame was far from over there, however, as Sulphur Springs would go on to score six more runs in the frame. During the inning the Lady Cats saw RBI singles from Karas McGary and Emerson Thompson, as well as another RBI double from Harper.

Now with a 16-0 lead it was once again time for Bryant to go back to work. Bryant struck out the side in order, getting the first two batters to strikeout looking before making the third batter of the inning strikeout swinging.

Katie Johns led off the top of the third with a double to center, setting the table for yet another big offensive inning. Johns later came in to score on an error, pushing the lead to 17-0.

Thompson followed with another single and Liberty-Eylau chose to walk Harper this time, loading the bases with one out for Ragan. Ragan hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring another run. Bryant followed by driving in what would be the final run of the night, hitting a line drive to center to make the Lady Cats lead 19-0.

The bottom of the third went the exact same way the bottom of the second did, with Bryant striking out the side in order. This time she was able to sit them all down swinging, and the Lady Cats walked away with the 19-0 victory.

With the game going just three innings, Bryant faced the minimum nine batters, eight of which she struck out. She did allow one base runner on a hit-by-pitch, but the Lady Cats were able to throw them out trying to steal.

Offensively it was a huge game, as Sulphur Springs scored 19 runs on 14 hits. Harper and Bryant led the way with three hits each, with Harper driving in three runs on a pair of doubles.

Other multi-hit games for Sulphur Springs included Thompson, Boatman and Adair who went a combined 6-for-9 with five RBI and six runs scored.

McGary and Johns also had a hit each and had five runs scored between the two of them.

The win brings Sulphur Springs final regular season record to 24-4 and finishes their district championship off with an undefeated district record. They will look to keep their strong play going into the postseason, which is scheduled to begin next week.
