Wildcats take number of All-District awards

With the Sulphur Springs Wildcats basketball season coming to an end last week, it wasn’t long until the All-District Awards for District 15-5A were announced. After a great season as a team, a number of players were recognized for their strong seasons as individuals.
Superlative awards
Senior Justin Haire won District MVP, after averaging team-high’s in points (13.4) and rebounds (11.6) per game. Prior to the season Haire signed with Dallas Baptist University to continue his career and helped lead the Wildcats all the way to the Regional Quarterfinals.
Head coach Brandon Shaver also took home a superlative award, winning Coach of the Year. In his first season as the Wildcats head coach Shaver helped lead his team to a district championship, going 10-2 in district play. The Wildcats finished one game ahead of both Mount Pleasant and Hallsville, thanks in large part to a seven-game winning streak to finish the regular season.

First Team
Sulphur Springs had three players that were named First Team All-District, senior Caleb Alexander, junior Kordrick Turner and junior Branson Lynn. Alexander played a huge role in the Wildcats offense, averaging just shy of 10 points per game for the season. He was also the teams best 3-point shooter, making an impressive 44% of his attempts.
Turner was the second-leading scorer for the Wildcats this season, finishing with 12.2 points per game, a number the climbed in the later parts of the season. The junior big man shot an efficient 56.7% from the field and also grabbed 6.3 rebounds per game.
Lynn was the leading ball handler for the Wildcats this season and did a great job of creating points for both himself and his teammates. Lynn averaged 9.7 points per game on the year and had the second-highest +/- of the team at a +10.1.
Second Team
Sulphur Springs also had a pair of players who were named Second Team All-District, senior Cason Arrington and junior Parker Whisenhunt. Arrington played a big role for Sulphur Springs, starting and regular being one of the teams best defensive players. While Arrington didn’t shoot a ton, he did so at an efficient rate, shooting 43.3% from the field and 40% from 3.
Whisenhunt was one of the teams best two-way players, consistently bringing production on both ends of the floor. Whisenhunt averaged over 10 points per game and regularly made big plays to give his team energy. He also led the team in steals with just under two per game.
Honorable Mention
The Wildcats also had one player finish as honorable mention, junior Malachi Myles. Myles was a very high-energy player for Sulphur Springs this year, coming off the bench and making plays for his team. Despite not shooting a ton, he had the highest field goal percentage on the team, making 63% of his shots on the season.
