Hornets finish as runner-up in Freeman Parish Tournament

The Miller Grove Hornets resumed action in the Freeman Parish Tournament this weekend, after kicking things off Thursday with a 60-37 win over CHAAMP. Entering Friday’s action with a 7-3 record, the Hornets were hoping to keep their strong play going.
Miller Grove got things started Friday with a game agains the host school, North Hopkins. Despite going against the team with home court advantage and the crowd behind them, the Hornets were able to pull out the win, taking it by a close score of 48-44.
Tanner Hensley led the charge for Miller Grove, having a strong 18-point, seven-rebound performance. Hensley also had three assists, three deflections and one steal.
Also scoring in double-digits was Lexton Sly, who had 11 points, four rebounds, three deflections and three assists. Ryker Haivala and Landon Burnett had strong games, scoring eight points and seven points respectively. Jacob George and Jagger Qualls each had two points, while Bradley Nordin had one steal and one deflection.
After a pair of wins to open the tournament, Miller Grove would meet their match against Bells. The Hornets did their best to grab another win, but fell by a final score of 47-35.
Hensley and Sly paced the way again, this time scoring 16 points and 11 points respectively. Hensley also had six rebounds and a pair of assists, while Sly had four deflections and two rebounds.

Burnett had another solid outing, finishing with eight points and four rebounds. George had three rebounds, while Haivala, Qualls and Nordin each had one.
Thanks to a 2-1 start to open the tournament, Miller Grove came back Saturday, this time looking for some championship hardware. The Hornets had their hands full, going up against a good Bonham team.
The Hornets were able to keep tings close the entire way, but ultimately fell just short by a close score of 38-34.
Hensley once again led the way for Miller Grove, finishing with 14 points and four rebounds. The Hornets big man also had one steal in the four-point loss.
Sly was next, posting a very well-rounded game of us in, finishing with seven points, seven deflections, four assists and two rebounds. Right behind him was Burnett who had a game-high 12 rebounds, to go along with six points and three assists.
The loss drops Miller Grove’s record to 8-5 after falling just short in their last two outings. The Hornets will have another fun test Tuesday, as they hit the road to face the 7-1 Yantis Owls. Coverage of that game will be published on Front Porch News.
