Playoff Home-Field Advantage Becoming Very Real Possibility
In sports there are many cliches we often talk about, one of them being “home-field advantage” and how much of a difference that makes, especially at the college and high school levels. Five times per season, typically, we see the Sulphur Springs faithful pack out Gerald Prim Stadium, bringing the energy and helping give their Wildcats every advantage they can. Now, fans across the state may have the opportunity to do so for a sixth and even bigger opportunity.
The UIL Athletic Committee has approved a proposal for home-field advantage in the Bi-District round of the playoffs in Classes 4A and below, something that has already been put in place for 6A and 5A football. The proposal would create home-field advantage in the bi-district round, not just for football, but for volleyball, basketball and soccer as well. The proposal does not include baseball and softball, due to their “best-of-three” series’, which often times include “home-and-home” scenarios already.
The UIL will meet again in October to vote on the proposal and it could go into effect as early as the 2027-28 scholastic calendar year, though some district’s have already begun negotiating with their bi-district’s to implement home-field advantage as soon as this season.
The home-field advantage would go to the higher seed in each bi-district matchup, providing even more incentive for teams who either win their district or finish in second place. Now, with a potential home playoff game on the line, the stakes for each district matchup become even higher and make each win, or loss, that much more significant.
In the first four years of the Coach Faircloth Era, the Wildcats have been a playoff team and have been very good regardless of where they were playing, having a combined record of 35-12. However, when playing in front of their home crowd at Gerald Prim Stadium, the Wildcats record improves to 17-3, with their most recent home loss dating all the way back to November of 2024.
When you think of Texas High School Football, the first thing that always comes to mind is Friday Night Light’s. It’s the electric crowds, playing in front of your own family, friends, neighbors, the fellow members of your own community. Carrying that over into the postseason creates the possibility of even more electric and iconic moments.
Hopefully a home playoff game will be coming to a stadium near you in the near future.
