Funeral service for Max Massey, Sr., of Cumby, Texas will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs, Texas with Rev. Johnny Darrow and Rev. Brian Bosworth officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park with Wade Kines, Jared Massey, Chad Ferrell, Gary Lewis, Doyle McKenzie, and Tiger Massey serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Massey, Bill Watts, and Jimmy Winfrey. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mr. Massey passed away at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

 

Max Ray Massey, Sr. was born on April 18, 1934 in Wood County to Thomas Lavigor and Esther (Coker) Massey. He married Ilene Higgins in Pickton, Texas on September 18, 1955. Max was the store Manager for Safeway grocery store for many years and retired from Gerber. He was known for his woodworking, especially at Wesley Methodist Church. Max was a member of the Shooks Chapel Methodist Church.

 

Max is survived by his wife, Ilene Massey of Cumby, Texas; daughter, Vivian Kines (Wade) of Kaufman, Texas; son, Max Massey, Jr. (Marcy) of Dover, Florida; grandchildren, Kelly Crawford, Brandy Kines, Justin Kines, Sara Waits, and Jared Massey; great-grandchildren, Jessica Crawford, Jacob Crawford, Emma Holloway, Hailey Kines, Parker Kines, Carter Massey, Cameron Massey, and Cole Massey; and brother, Tom Massey of Pine Forest, Texas.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther Massey and sister, Margie Carroll.
