The UIL Girls Golf State Championship was held earlier this week and it saw not one, but two different Hopkins County School’s competing for State Titles. After an entire year of hard work and incredible season’s, all of their time spent and dedication came to fruition at the State Tournament.

Sulphur Springs Lady Cats, Fourth Place

It was a fourth place finish for the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats, who opened the tournament with a strong showing on Day 1. The team of Alyson Thomas, Evelyn Birdsong, McKenna Meskimen, Kenzie Posey and Ramsey Ragan had a combined score of 330 on Day 1, putting them in second place behind only Andrews.

Day 2 saw another strong outing from the Lady Cats, but it was strong pushes from Comal Davenport and Glen Rose that saw them leap Sulphur Springs and leaving the Lady Cats to finish in fourth place.

Birdsong and Thomas led the way for Sulphur Springs and finished within just one stroke of each other. Birdsong finished with a total score of 161 and Thomas with a score of 162, with Birdsong finishing 19th overall and Thomas tying for 20th.

Also placing in the Top 50 as individuals were Meskimen and Posey. Meskimen had a score of 90 in Day 1, but was able to drop her score all the way to an 84 on Day 2, giving her a total score of 174 and finished as tied for 35th overall.

Posey opened the tournament with a great start, having a Day 1 score of 83, before going on to finish with a total score of 178. Her 178 total score was good for 43rd overall.

The Lady Cats historic season culminated with a fourth place finish and is something they will be able to look back on proudly in program history.

Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears, Eighth Place

The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears also had a historic season of their own, making it to the State Tournament. The team of Ryleigh Bell, Emma Carr, Zaylee Peyton, Jadi Jones and Ana Servin opened the event with a total score of 429 on Day 1, putting them in eighth place at the midway point.

The Lady Bears kept a pretty similar pace on Day 2, and while they weren’t able to catch any of the teams in front of them, they were able to stay in front of the teams behind them, rounding out the tournament with a combined score of 872 and finishing 26 strokes in front of the next closest team, holding on to their eighth place finish.

Carr led the way for the Lady Bears and opened the event with a Day 1 score of 92, putting her in ninth place individually. While she wasn’t able to keep the same pace in Day 2, she still had a strong showing that was good enough to keep her in the Top 20, finishing with the 18th best individual score.

Also placing inside the Top 50 individual scores were Bell, Jones and Peyton, with Bell finishing the highest in 34th place with a total score of 217. Jones finished with the 43rd best individual score, thanks to an impressive Day 2 that saw her score drop 18 strokes from her Day 1 finish. Peyton had a pretty consistent tournament, with her total score of 233 being tied for the 48th best individual score.

Much like the Lady Cats, the Lady Bears had an incredible season, finishing as one of the Top 10 teams in all of 1A and with four of their members finishing in the Top 50. This season will surely be one they look back on proudly for years to come.
