Breast Cancer Support Group Meeting Summary

Breast Cancer Support Group Meeting Summary
  • PublishedMarch 20, 2025

The March gathering of the Hopkins County Breast Cancer Support Group was like a pot of gold for the soul on St. Patrick’s Day. Renee Maeker provided the opening prayer.

Jo Beth Brewer provided a touching reading about the pity parties women sometimes throw themselves when first diagnosed with breast cancer. Jo Beth’s presentation led to a group discussion about each attendee’s experiences on her cancer journey.

The discussion was lively and reflective, with each woman sharing and encouraging the others. When years of survival were shared, cheers and claps were the response.

After the program and discussion concluded, a door prize drawing was held, and a dessert, green of course, was served. Debbie Stinson, Jo Beth Brewer, and Cathy Allison provided the door prizes, and Carolyn McKinney prepared the dessert.

The Breast Cancer Support Group invites women with any type of cancer to join them each month on the second Monday at 5:30 pm in the Medical Plaza Conference Room, 113 Airport Rd, on the campus of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital – Sulphur Springs. The April meeting will be held on April 14. Though the group’s focus is on breast cancer, there are shared experiences among all cancer patients and survivors.

The Hopkins County Health Care Foundation sponsors the support group as part of its In My Closet offerings. Other aspects of In My Closet include an annual free mammography clinic held in October and free supplies for breast cancer patients and survivors, such as wigs, mastectomy bras, and breast prosthetics, which are available year-round by appointment.
