Peace of Mind

Rich or poor, city or country, most folks want their babies and grandbabies to do better, have more, to be even more successful than we’ve been.  Mostly we want them to take advantage of the opportunities that we have fought so hard for them to have.

Depending on the part of the country the younger folks are living in, opportunities may be more readily and reasonably attained.  In many places affordable housing, especially home purchases, may just about be out of reach.  In other parts of the country prices may be more reasonable or attainable but accumulating the down payment in the face of rising costs may also be a big stumbling block for the young folks.

It’s about time that you may want to have the talk with the young ones about taxes and upkeep that go along with the home they’ve fought so hard to get in by the skin of their teeth.  In more reasonable times, us older guys started out slowly working our way from apartment and starter house to upgrades to maybe finally getting into that forever house, only to find in retirement that we might wanna downsize and live a little cheaper in our senior years.

I think of all the years and sweat and effort it took most of us to get to a stopping point where we felt reasonably comfortable with our station in life. We look at the impatient young ones who sometimes seem to think they can accomplish or acquire in a few short years what we have in 30-40 years.  Looking at the cost of everything these days our heart hurts for the young folks who may have to temper those high expectations they’ve started out with on their marital journey.

Television and social media often present a glamor shot view of the world.  A short drive to different parts of your town or community could testify that not everyone has been able or maybe not even wanted to pay the price to try and acquire the best of everything.  We all have some type of dreams and ambitions along the way.  Sometimes life has a way of helping folks come to grips with reality.  Sometimes people reach a point where they feel comfortable and don’t really want to fight the rat race anymore.  They just want the rats to quit nibbling at what they have accumulated.  Others fight on, picking up newer and better, maybe with bigger payments, hoping the world thinks they’re doing okay.  Still, other folks may say I don’t give a hang about what the world thinks.  I just want to lay my head down at night, thankful for what I do have.  It takes all kinds.  I think I tend to lean towards the peace of mind and restful sleep side of things.
