why protein is so important

You hear it all the time, but why is including protein in your diet so important and what can you eat to help get protein daily?

Incorporating protein into our diet is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. Proteins are essential macronutrients composed of amino acids, which serve as the building blocks for various bodily functions. Adequate protein can help with… Muscle Development and Repair Protein plays a pivotal role in the growth and repair of muscles. Engaging in physical activities, including exercise and daily movements, causes catabolism (the breaking down of muscle). Protein intake supports the repair process, leading to stronger and more resilient muscles.

Weight Management & Blood Sugar Regulation

Including protein in your diet can aid in weight management. Proteins have a high satiety level, making you feel fuller for a longer time. This can help control cravings and prevent overeating, contributing to weight loss or maintenance. Also, protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels by slowing down the process of glucose (sugar).

Protein Resources

When we think of meat, we think protein. But, it’s also good to remember that protein is found in dairy, legumes, and nut sources like cheese, yogurt, eggs, egg whites, milk, walnuts, almonds, and beans such as pinto, black & garbanzo. Something as simple as eating 4oz of chicken at lunch or dinner can get you approximately 25g of protein and 1 cup of cooked pinto beans could be approximately 10g of protein. There are so many options out there these days to help supplement protein intake, as well, such as shakes, bars, chips and even crackers. A few of my favorite brands are Fairlife, PEScience, Barebells & Quest.

Although we all need protein for different reasons and even in different amounts, we all still benefit from protein in our diets. Getting an adequate amount of protein is fundamental for supporting various bodily functions, from muscle health to immune system function. A balanced and protein-rich diet is key to achieving and maintaining optimal health.
