Celebrating Gayland Dial: A True Treasure in Saputo
In Sulphur Springs, Texas, the name Saputo is known for excellence in dairy processing. Few know this better than Gayland Dial, who has dedicated 45 years of his life to working in the dairy industry. His story is one of pride, hard work, and the kind of dedication that has shaped both his life and his career.
His career began right after high school at Borden’s Milk Products LLC, before transitioning to Morningstar Foods and eventually joining Saputo in 2011. Now, as a Scholle support operator, Gayland plays a crucial part in maintaining the smooth operation of the packaging system, while also providing essential mental support to his coworkers. “My role here is providing mental support,” he says with a quiet smile, grateful for the trust he’s built over the years.
Over the years, Gayland has seen Saputo transform through the company’s growth and technological advancements. These advancements still impress him today. As the operator of a large box-making machine, he ensures that products are packaged efficiently and safely—a role he takes very seriously. “There’s a lot of different machinery now,” he says, reflecting on just how far things have come. His ability to adapt and grow has made him an important part of Saputo’s success.
Throughout his career, Gayland has been a model of consistency, rarely missing a day of work. “I’ve only called in sick twice in 45 years,” he says proudly. His strong work ethic has earned him the respect of everyone around him. “I just come to work every day and do what I’ve got to do,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of showing up.
Back when he was at Borden, the hours were tough—he recalls working 40 hours in just two days. “You’d get just enough rest to make it through the day. You’d come to work tired and go home tired.” Now, though, he appreciates the structure Saputo provides. “Here, there are set hours for coming in and going home,” he says, chuckling as he adds that both he and his feet are grateful for that.
For Gayland, Saputo’s focus on employee well-being has been a major reason why he’s stayed so long. “It’s a good place to work,” he says. Looking back on his career, he feels very grateful. “The good Lord’s let me be able to come to work every day. That’s what I’m most proud of,” he shares, acknowledging the blessings he’s received over the years.
When asked what advice he’d give to someone just starting out, Gayland’s response is straightforward and wise: “Be accountable for yourself, work hard, and do what you need to do.” He credits his mother for instilling that work ethic in him. He remembers watching her push through tough times without ever complaining. “You might be hurt, you might be beat up, but you just have to get up and go,” he says. His mom was the kind of person he looked up to.
For Gayland, taking pride in his work is everything. His machine relies on him, so over the years, he’s learned to rely on himself. “I always say, have a lot of pride in what you do. You might not be the best but always try to do your best. The way you work is what your name carries,” he says, a mindset that has guided the way he approaches every task. “If I can’t do it well, I don’t try to halfway do it.” It’s this kind of attitude that’s made him such a well-respected figure at Saputo.
As Saputo continues to grow and innovate, it’s people like Gayland who will remain at the heart of the company’s success. His 45-year journey is a testament to hard work, loyalty, and a commitment to excellence. And while his role may not always be in the spotlight, Gayland’s contributions are undeniable.
As he continues in his position, he’s a shining example of what it means to dedicate oneself fully to a job, ensuring not just a bright future for himself but for everyone he works alongside.
