Enjoy Vacation & Feel Good While Doing It
Vacation is a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy new experiences. However, it’s also essential to maintain healthy eating habits to keep your energy levels up and avoid unnecessary weight gain. I often get asked for advice for eating out or for not completely overriding progress while away from home. Here are some helpful strategies to ensure you enjoy your vacation without compromising any hard work you’ve put in to feel confident or your health.
Stay Hydrated
Traveling, especially by air, can dehydrate you. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps maintain your energy levels and can prevent overeating, as thirst is often confused with hunger.
Eat Breakfast/Don’t Skip Meals
Starting your day with a balanced breakfast can help you make healthier choices throughout the day. Opt for options high in protein and fiber like eggs, yogurt with fresh fruit, or whole-grain toast with avocado. This meal sets the tone for the rest of your day and keeps you satiated during morning activities. Also, when meals are skipped then you’re more likely to binge or overindulge when you do sit down to eat.
Snack Wisely
Bringing healthy snacks can help you avoid the temptation of unhealthy options. Pack items like nuts, seeds, fresh or dried fruit, protein bars or shakes, or whole-grain crackers to keep you full and energized. These portable snacks are especially useful during travel days, while laying on the beach, or while sightseeing.
Portion Control
Vacation often means indulging in local delicacies and trying new foods, which is okay in moderation. Share dishes with travel companions to taste more variety without overeating. Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues, and the big one…don’t feel obligated to finish large portions.
Balance Your Plate
When dining out, aim to fill half your plate with vegetables or fruits, a quarter with lean protein, and a quarter with whole grains. This simple guideline helps ensure you’re getting a balanced mix of nutrients while still enjoying the local fare.
Limit Sugary Drinks and Alcohol
Many cocktails and soft drinks are loaded with sugar and empty calories meaning soon after consumption, you’ll find yourself feeling hungry. Opt for water and consider limiting yourself alcoholic intake per day. If you choose to drink, consider beverages like wine or light beer, or spirits with soda water and a splash of lime. My go-to is vodka and water with lemon.
Stay Active
Incorporating physical activity into your vacation can help balance out indulgent meals. Whether you’re walking around a new city, hiking, swimming, or participating in adventure activities, staying active also enhances your overall travel experience.
Mindful Eating
Take the time to eat slowly and savor each bite. Enjoying your food mindfully not only makes the experience more pleasurable but also helps you recognize when you’re full, reducing the likelihood of overeating.
Listen to Your Body
Finally, listen to your body’s signals. If you feel full or uncomfortable, it’s okay to stop eating. Your body knows best, and respecting its signals will ensure you don’t overindulge and feel sluggish during your trip.
By incorporating these healthy habits into your vacation routine, you can enjoy your travels to the fullest without sacrificing your well-being. Remember, balance is key – indulge mindfully, stay active and make nutritious choices whenever possible. Feel good & feel confident!
