Wildcats Take Home Multiple All-District Awards After Postseason Bid
  • PublishedJune 11, 2024

The 2024 season was a strong one for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats baseball team, snapping their four-year playoff drought. In district play they picked up a pair of big wins against Paris, as well as a pair of big wins against Pittsburg that helped them secure a playoff spot.

Once in the postseason, Sulphur Springs continued to play good baseball, hosting Lindale in the opening game of the best-of-three Bi-District series. The Wildcats struck first, scoring a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats were able to add to their lead, scoring a run in the fourth and another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0. While they would do their best, Lindale was able to complete a huge comeback victory, winning 5-4 and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

With the momentum on their side, Lindale controlled game two of the series, winning 4-0 and advancing to the Area Round.

For their strong efforts this season, the Wildcats were represented well in the All-District Awards. Snapping a playoff drought and with multiple players recognized for their strong play, the future is bright for the Wildcats baseball program.

Newcomer of the Year

Alex Whittle, Freshman– Freshman Alex Whittle was named Newcomer of the Year for District 15-4A and for good reason. The left-handed pitcher had a number of dominating performances on the mound, featuring a great mix of ability to throws strikes while also forcing opposing batters to swing and miss.

Earning a prominent role in the Wildcats pitching staff as just a freshman, Whittle will be a reliable arm, both as a starter and in relief for Sulphur Springs for years to come.

First Team All-District

Kaden Mitchell, Junior– Junior Kaden Mitchell was named First Team All-District Designated Hitter, having one of the best offensive seasons of anyone in the district. Hitting at the top of the order, Mitchell was reliable and consistent, getting hits and drawing walks to set the table for the heart of the order. At one point Mitchell carried an eight-game hitting streak, showing both his talent and consistency.

With another year of high level ball under his belt, Mitchell will look to be a driving force and senior leader for the Wildcats in 2025.

Second Team All-District

Corbin Argenbright, Sophomore– As just a sophomore, Corbin Argenbright was named Second Team All-District Utility Player and for good reason. Argenbright showed his versatility and his ability to contribute in numerous ways, being used all over the field.

The sophomore did a little bit of everything, from playing third base, catcher, pitcher and more. He also was able to do so while also hitting at the top of the order for the Wildcats and being a consistent contributor at the plate. With still two more seasons ahead of him, Argenbright’s talent and versatility will prove to be huge for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats.

Honorable Mention

Alex Macias, Junior- Alex Macias had a great junior campaign in 2024 for Sulphur Springs. The Wildcats shortstop proved to be one of the best defensive middle infielders in the district, regularly making great plays and saving potential base runners with his glove.

Now with multiple seasons on varsity and showing improvement in each year, the talented middle infielder will look to take another stride going into his senior campaign. With the momentum of a postseason appearance and a strong returning cast behind them, Sulphur Springs will look to make another playoff run in 2025.
