Sulphur Springs Lady Cats and Wildcats Set For Playoff Double-Header

Sulphur Springs Lady Cats and Wildcats Set For Playoff Double-Header
  • PublishedMarch 21, 2023

Both the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats and Wildcats soccer teams had spectacular regular seasons, with the Lady Cats winning their first District Title in school history, and the boys team finishing as Co-District Champs. Now the postseason is here, and for the opening round at least, fans of both programs will get to see both teams play on the same night.

Sulphur Springs Lady Cats

For the opening round matchup, the Lady Cats find themselves going up against Tyler Chapel Hill, a team who finished the regular season with a record of 9-11-2. They also went 7-6-1 in district play, earning the four seed in District 14-4A.

The matchup between these two teams is set for 5 p.m. Thursday in Lindale. The two teams each have six games played against common opponents, though they have had much different outcomes in said games.

Sulphur Springs has been dominant in their matchups against common opponents, going a perfect 6-0 in said games and outscoring their opponents 36-4. Tyler Chapel Hill on the other hand, is 3-2-1 in said games, squeaking out a winning record. The score differential tells a much different story, however, as they have been outscored in those games 16-5, barely winning the games they have won and being blown out in the games they have lost.

The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats have been one of the hottest teams in the state of Texas, as they currently ride a 10-game winning streak to finish the regular season with a record of 17-5, including a perfect 8-0 district record. During their 10-game winning streak they have scored an impressive 55 goals and perhaps even more impressively they have allowed just six goals.

The Lady Cats will look to keep their impressive play going into the postseason, starting with their opening round match against Tyler Chapel Hill Thursday.

Sulphur Springs Wildcats

Fans who were wanting to see the Sulphur Springs Wildcats as well won’t have to look much further, as the Wildcats are set to play immediately after the Lady Cats. Despite being the Co-District Champs, the Wildcats finished as the two seed in their district, and will be going up against the Athens Hornets.

Athens has an impressive record of 17-8 and went 13-3 in district play, despite being the three seed from District 14-4A. This season Athens has scored an impressive 101 goals and have only allowed 44 goals.

The Hornets even ended their season on a five-game winning streak, and during that time they outscored their opponents 22-2.

Against common opponents the two teams stack up fairly evenly, with Sulphur Springs going 2-3-1 and Athens going 2-6. The main difference is Sulphur Springs played all the teams in low scoring affairs, while Athens was scoring and/or allowing more goals.

Much like the Lady Cats, the Wildcats enter the game with a ton of momentum, wining 11 of their last 12 games and doing so to a combined score of 37-5. They will look to keep the momentum and on their side and look to make another playoff run similar to the one they made just three seasons ago when they went three rounds deep.

Come out and support both the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats and Wildcats in person, with the first game beginning at 5 p.m. in Lindale Thursday, with the second game to follow immediately after.
