Birth Is an Endurance Event

Considering average push time is a multiple hour event in America, giving birth is an endurance event— similar to a 10k, half marathon, or marathon pending labor and push time. I believe birth is something women should train and prepare for, given it is an endurance event.

So many of the symptoms and diagnoses I treat in the clinic go back to pregnancy, birth, or postpartum. And as a healthcare provider, I believe it’s is crucial to look upstream and either catch these symptoms/diagnoses at their origin, or provide wellness care, which is more prophylactic or preventive in nature. We can either keep pulling people out of the river, or look upstream and figure out why they’re falling in, right?

So what exactly does training or preparing for birth look like?

Birth prep appointments at my office cover treatment of any musculoskeletal pain (low back pain, tailbone pain, hip pain, round ligament pain), as pain is a sign that something is wrong and will likely yield a better birth experience if treated beforehand. Additionally, we go over how to push, pain management strategies, how to breathe during birth, perineal massage (this decreases the likelihood of tearing during birth), and positional recommendations for the first and second stage of labor. Because motherhood is physical, I also give exercises that are safe and effective to initiate immediately postpartum to begin re-engaging the core musculature.

In my clinical experience, most women have a smoother recovery postpartum and experience less birth related injury when going into birth optimally prepared.
