Lady Cats take down Lindale 3-1

The Sulphur Springs Ladycats varsity soccer team faced off against the Lindale Lady Eagles Tuesday night in a non-district game at home. The Ladycats had their work cut out for them in order to make the win. Lindale put up a good fight but in the end fell to the Ladycats 3-1. “The last minute game scheduled against, the Lady Eagles was fun yet an intense matchup” stated Coach Brena.

Junior, Haylee Shultz made the first goal of the night that started out on a set play from a short free kick by Rebekah Stanley.  Rowan Faircloth ran on the ball first and collided into a player and missed the shot.  Shultz ran in and made it first to the ball before the defender and put it in the back of the net.  With a bit of extra work the goal was made, which makes it that much sweeter. “With Lindale currently in second place, in their district, we knew we needed to come out taking shots first,” Coach Brena commented.

Lindale tied up the game after a with collision in the box between keeper, Maya Olvera, and Isabelle Thesing. Thesing shielded the ball but Olvera didn’t quite make it in time to make the save and Lindale pushed in from behind to sneak a goal away from the Cats.

Late in the first half Faircloth moved the ball for the shot to score the second goal of the night. 2-1 Ladycats at the half.

The game continued with the team’s trading possession throughout the second half. The Ladycats were moving the ball well and placing passes to the feet of their targets. The final goal saw passes from Valerie Flecker to Anna Williams then shot by Faircloth while in traffic for the goal, 3-1 Ladycats.

The Ladycats tried hard all night to connect the ball to the back of the net. Faircloth and Thesing both had notable shots that hit the crossbar just inches from crossing the line to score the goal. Williams and Flecker had multiple shots on goal that were stopped by the keeper. “We had many other opportunities to score but kept finding the goal posts.  We had at least seven shots that hit the posts” said Coach Brena.  These Ladycats are exciting to watch and are proving to be a team to play during district. This Friday is a bye week for Varsity, their next game will be at Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, February 28.
