Sulphur Springs Lady Cats Cruise Past Mount Pleasant

The No. 3 ranked Sulphur Springs Lady Cats hosted the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers Monday, in a game that was reschedule due to weather. In what had all the feeling of a rivalry game, the Lady Cats were looking to pick up a win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

The Lady Cats, led by Coach Adriana Brena, came out with a ton of intensity, looking to set the tone against her former team. The Lady Cats were able to stay on the attack, putting themselves in good position to score, though it was the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers who helped them with the first goal. In the opening minutes of the game, the Lady Tigers knocked in an own goal, while trying to clear the ball, giving Sulphur Springs an early 1-0 lead.

Trailing 1-0, the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers were able to take control, keeping possession of the ball at a much higher rate, though they were never able to get a goal out of it.

Both teams settled in, with neither team able to get much of an advantage over the other. It wasn’t there were 10 minutes left in the half until either team was able to get back on the board.

After the ball had been on Mount Pleasant’s side of the field for some time, Sulphur Springs was able to get the ball in their direction. The Lady Cat’s were going fast in transition when sophomore Valerie Flecker found freshman Jolea Moore, who was able to knock it in for a 2-0 lead.

The scoring didn’t stop there in the half, however, as the Lady Cats kept the high intensity going. Just a few moments late junior Haylee Shultz scored her 12 goal of the season, thanks to an assist from freshman Addy Fenton. The assist marked the seventh of the season for Fenton, who also has three goals to go with them, as the Lady Cats went to the locker rooms leading 3-0 at the end of the first half.

Trailing 3-0, the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers opened the second half very aggressively, controlling time of possession. Though it took them a while to do, the Lady Tigers would score the first goal of the half, cutting Sulphur Springs’ lead to 3-1 with 27 minutes left to play.

Though there were only 27 minutes left, the game was far from over. Despite playing with a 3-1 lead, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats continued to stay aggressive, looking to continue to add to their lead, rather than trying to simply hold Mount Pleasant off.

The Lady Cats were able to do just that, when junior Kylie Clark knocked in one from 35 yards out, squeezing it past the goal keeper in the top left corner of the goal. The goal was the seventh of the year for Clark and extended the Lady Cats’ lead to 4-1.

The Lady Tigers continued to fight hard and were even able to score once more, but it was too late to mount a comeback, as the Lady Cats’ held on for the 4-2 win.

The win marks the seventh of the season for Sulphur Springs and is also the sixth in their last seven games. In those seven games the Lady Cats’ are outscoring their opponents by an incredible score of 35-4.

The 7-4 Lady Cats will be back in action Friday, when they hit the road to face Celina. Stay tuned to Front Porch News for continued coverage of Sulphur Springs Lady Cats soccer. You can see the full broadcast of Monday’s game at the top of the article, or click here.
