Both the Saltillo Lions and Lady Lions basketball teams were at home Tuesday, treating their fans to plenty of basketball. The Lions were facing a 6-5 Bland Tigers team who was coming off a pair of wins, while the Lady Lions were going up against Union Hill for their district opener.

Saltillo Lady Lions

It’s been a big week for the No. 9 ranked Saltillo Lady Lions, who climbed inside the Top-10 of the TABC rankings for the first time this season. They followed it up by hosting Union Hill for their first district game of the season.

The Lady Lions opened the game with a huge first quarter, immediately finding their rhythm both on offense and defense. Offensively, they were able to post a game-high 24 points, while not allowing a single point on the other end.

The second quarter saw more of the same, with Saltillo continuing to shutout their opponents in the first half. They added another 18 points of their own to take a 42-0 lead halfway through.

In the second half Saltillo was able to get more players involved, giving their starters a chance to catch their breath. While the scoring slowed down, they still added another 20 points in the final two quarters, while only allowing nine points, as they won the game by a final score of 62-9.

Julianna Giles and Ryleigh Redar led the team in scoring, each finishing with 11 points. They were the only players to finish in double-digits, as a total of 10 different Lady Lions scored in the 53-point victory.

Allie Lane and Maysen Pipkin finished just outside of double-digits, scoring nine points and eight points respectively. Other scorers included Lani Dean with seven points, Gabby Ross and Yadhira Alonso with four points each, Shelbi Ricketson and Crissey Campos, who each had three points and Jaylee Miller with two points.

The win improves the Lady Lions’ record to 11-2 and makes them 1-0 to open district play. They will get the chance to play in multiple games this weekend, when they play in the Cap Herman Tournament in Sulphur Bluff.

Saltillo Lions

The Saltillo Lions were also at home Tuesday, for just the fourth time this season. With a 2-1 record in the previous three home games, they were looking to improve to a .750 win percentage at home to open the season.

The first quarter would end up being the lowest scoring frame of the night, as both teams were feeling each other out and trying to find their own rhythm. Even so, Saltillo was able to give themselves a 13-6 lead at the end of the first frame.

The second quarter saw a similar pace, though Bland was able to keep things a bit closer. The Bland Tigers scored nine points, while the Lions matched their previous total of 13, taking a 26-15 lead at the end of the first half.

Saltillo opened the second half with their highest scoring frame of the night, as Bland did their best to keep up. They were able to give themselves a 16-point lead heading into the final frame, all but putting the game away.

Bland never backed down, answering back with their best frame of the night in the fourth quarter. The Tigers were even able to outscore Saltillo 19-12, though it was too little too late, as the Lions won the game by a final score of 55-46.

Ethan White led the way for Saltillo, doing so in an impressive 18-point outing. Colton McGill was one point behind him, finishing the game with 17 points.

Also finishing in double-digits was David Whitworth was 12 points. Coy Collins and Luke Ritter each had three points, while Heston Peeples had two points.

The win makes Saltillo 8-3, and makes them 3-1 at home. The Lions are back in action on Thursday, bright and early with an 8 a.m. start against No. 1 ranked Graford in the North Hopkins Tournament.
