Another week has come and gone, which means a new update to the Texas Association Basketball Coaches has been released. A number of Hopkins County teams have been featured in the rankings to start the season, and this week see’s them all stay up there.
Sulphur Springs Wildcats
The Sulphur Springs Wildcats opened the season ranked No. 10 in the state, and immediately showed they deserve that ranking. After taking down No. 22 Wilmer Hutchins, they were given another chance, this time against No. 14 Dallas Lincoln, in the Chad’s Media Invitational.
Though the Wildcats didn’t get off to a great start, they never let that get them down. A strong second half put Sulphur Springs back in the lead early in the fourth quarter, and they held on to win by a final score of 55-46.
They also tuned around and beat Naaman Forrest the following day, doing so in blowout fashion. They beat Naaman Forrest 71-51, improving their record to a perfect 5-0.
The newest update to the rankings see’s them staying steady at No. 10. So far this season they have outscored their opponents 375-218, winning each game by an average of 75-44.
This week they will face Lakeview Centennial on the road, before playing in another tournament this weekend. They will look to continue their undefeated season and try to climb higher inside the Top-10.
North Hopkins Panthers
The North Hopkins Panthers are another Hopkins County team who finds themselves in the rankings, after having a record-breaking season last year. They were hoping to continue their momentum from last season and have done exactly that so far.

With just three games under their belt so far, they have looked impressive in each of them. They opened their season with a 49-34 win over Saltillo, before beating No. 14 in 1A Dodd City.
They followed that with a huge 70-22 blowout win over Sulphur Bluff. They have a busy week ahead, starting with a home match against Pottsboro.
After that they will face Fannindel, Wolfe City, Miller Grove and Whitewright in tournament action. Will the No. 16 ranked Panthers be able to improve their high ranking?
Saltillo Lady Lions
The Saltillo Lady Lions have been a mainstay in the TABC rankings for years, and this season is no different. As the only Hopkins County girls team in the rankings, at the time of this article, they are off to another strong start, going 10-1 to open the season.
They opened their season with eight consecutive victories, six of which were by double-digits. Their only loss so far has come at the hands of No. 2 ranked Huckabay, who they fell to by a close score of 53-45.
They have been led in large part by Julianna Giles, who has scored in double-digits in each of the last five games. Allie Lane and Gabby Ross have also had strong starts to the season, regularly scoring in double-digits as well.
With a strong start to the season, the Lady Lions are in perfect position to break inside the top-10, currently sitting at No. 11 in the rankings. Their next match is against the No. 25 ranked team in 4A, the Canton Lady Eagles.
