Our First TVBack when my sister and I were little, we did not have TV in our rooms.  We finally got one for Christmas that we had to share when I was 7 or 8 and my sister was 11 or 12.  We almost didn’t get it due to my being naughty! My mom had warned my sister and me not to go in the living room until she told us it was okay (remember the formal living rooms everyone had back then which was kept perfect in the event unexpected guests arrived?).  This was also the room that held the Christmas tree, so what was a young girl to do?I could not resist seeing what was going on in the living room.  One afternoon when I thought my mom was busy for a bit, I sneaked into the living room.  There beside the dining table was a large mass covered with a blanket.  I just had to see what was under the blanket. My plan was to crawl under the dining table and gently lift the blanket without making sound.  I thought that if someone did come in, they would not see me under the table. As was always the case, I couldn’t get away with anything.  My mom never missed a thing.  All of a sudden, the door swung open, and my mom demanded, “Who is in here?”  As she would tell the story for years and decades afterward, “A tiny voice proclaimed, ‘I am, mommy.'”Yes, I got in trouble.  Yes, the TV was housed in my sister’s room (not mine).  And yes, I never did that sort of thing again.  I remember my mom being so unhappy with me.  But, as I heard her tell that story through the years, I think it made her laugh more than anything (just not in front of me).I guess it was a bit of Christmas mischief that got into me, and I think I got a spanking for it, but it did teach me to follow the rules!
