The Northeast Texas Choral Society is coming together to celebrate 25 years together making beautiful music for the benefit of the arts in our area.

It all started in 1997, when the concerts on the square series set out to perform a number that would need backup singers. However, local music lover Carol Allen saw an opportunity that couldn’t be missed.

“Carol Allen had an idea that we could possibly have a community chorus or choir,” said Gary Spraggins, chorus member and city councilor. “She thought, ‘well, why not?’”

Planning got underway and when 107 singers came to audition, it “freaked Carol out,” Spraggins noted. Out of those first auditions emerged a talented group of singers that persist to this day.

“You can be bone-tired, you can have a bum knee… and it doesn’t matter,” Allen said. “You are there when 80, 90, [or] 100 singers come into the room. They’re there [with] their energy and their excitement.”

The work, fun, and shared passion leads to an environment that Allen calls “very much a family.”

Member and soloist Marlon Chisom agreed, “It’s like a family to me.”

“When I’m here, I get to do what I love to do with the people I love to do it with,” Chisom said.

Although the tunes the group prepares range from fun and upbeat to praiseful, solemn and uplifting, “it’s always a joy to be there,” said accompanist Ken Hanushek.

The group delights in being able to bring the gift of music to Northeast Texas.

“Music embellishes the quality of life… whether you’re singing, playing, or you’re the listener,” Spraggins noted.

The Northeast Texas Choral Society can’t wait to show off their passion for the music they love in their 25th annual Christmas Concert, Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are available for purchase from NETCS singers, at local banks here in Sulphur Springs, or online at www.singerscount.org
