EvolutionRecently I was cleaning out a drawer in my old bedroom.  Much of the stuff is this drawer was from college.  In it was my old wallet.

The contents were a time capsule of all things late 1980s and early ’90s.   My old driver’s license with a photo of me with big hair.  A unicard (folks from the ’80s know).  A family photo.  A mini version of a sorority chapter composite.  And a pre-paid phone card.

Do you recall the need for phone cards?  In college, we could only make local calls on the phones in our rooms.  To call my parents, I had to use a long-distance phone card.  Mine was with AT&T.  There was a long number sequence that had to be entered, which I used so often I had it memorized.  Then, said long distance call would be charged against the money on deposit with the card.

This was long before cell phones (though there were car phones that had to be installed in the car).  I used the same pre-paid calling card all through college, master’s degree, and living in Ohio for a few years.  It wasn’t until 1997 when I got a bag phone (which did not need professional installation in the auto).  I had my first full-time, regular job which required some travel.  My parents wanted me to be safe, so they asked that I get a mobile phone.

I recall picking up a friend for lunch.  I would still park, get out, run in the building to get my friend.  To call them to come out didn’t cross my mind.  It would have been so decadent back then!

It is pretty amazing to me all the things that have come and gone in my short lifetime.  I recall meeting a local lady who was almost 100 years old (and still driving) when I worked at my dad’s dealership.  We had so much fun hearing her tales of everything she had witnessed in the world.

A few months back I was in a meeting with some younger ladies.  Since being out of the working world for three years after selling my business, I didn’t realize how the lingo had changed.  They kept talking about “leaning into” something and “putting a pin in it” for later discussion.  I almost laughed when I realized how out-of-date I had become!

Evolution is natural and something that will occur in every realm of life.  It seems that it happens more quickly these days.  Or maybe that is just a sign that I am getting old!
