Week 8 Hopkins County Preview

Another week of Texas High School football season is here! Once again all three Hopkins County teams are in action, and once again all three of them will be looking for a win, to keep their playoffs hopes alive, or in some instances, looking to better them. It’s the middle of October, the weather is great, spooky season is among us, and so is district football.

Sulphur Springs @ Mabank

Last week was the first chance for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats to see if their success would translate into district play. After a slow first quarter in which neither team scored, the Wildcats 21-skunked Community in the second quarter, in route to a 37-7 win.

Now with a record of 5-1 on the year, the Wildcats will look to see if they can do something they haven’t done since 2018 (which was the last time they made the playoffs), win four consecutive games. Though they will be on the road, they have to feel good about their chances, going up against a Mabank team who was beaten 40-0 last week.

The Panthers of Mabank play a similar style to the one Sulphur Springs saw last week, relying on the run game of seniors Cody Chapman and Jayden Rogers. The two seniors combine for an average of 160 yards per game, and have eight touchdowns between the two of them.

If they Wildcats defense, who allows just 14 points per game, can play as well as they have this season, they should be in great shape for yet another win. This week, the Wildcats are an 18-point favorite against Mabank according to Dave Campbell’s.

Como-Pickton vs Wolfe City

Things haven’t been great for the Como-Pickton Eagles recently, though there’s still time for them to turn things around. Since their Week 2 win vs Detroit, the Eagles have gone 0-5 and have been outscored 194-36, though it’s been against very strong competition.

With the bulk of their games so far being on the road, Como-Pickton will get the chance to play in front of their home crowd this week. They will also be doing so against a Wolfe City team who has had their own struggles so far, winning just one more game than Como-Pickton so far.

Something to give Eagles fans hope, Wolfe City had a similar outcome as the Eagles in their game against the district favorite Cooper Bulldogs. Wolfe City lost 49-6, while Como-Pickton was just three points away form the exact same outcome, at 52-6.

This could be a great chance for the Eagles to pick up their first district win, and give them some momentum going into the final weeks of their schedule. After that, they would go up against Alba-Golden, a team who is 1-2 in district play and fell to Wolfe City by a score of 24-14.

Dave Campbell’s has Como-Pickton as a 19-point underdog this week. Como-Pickton was also an underdog in their win against Detroit, showing they can win games even when they aren’t predicted to do so, and will be looking to do so again Friday night.

Cumby vs Maud

The Cumby Trojans opened district play on the road last week, looking to start things off with a win. While they were unable to do so, they came very close, even leading in the fourth quarter. Ultimately Detroit was able to prevail, by a score of 36-32, but Cumby and their fans have plenty to feel good about.

This week, much like Como-Pickton, they will get the chance to play in front of their home crowd. They will be doing so against the Maud Cardinals, who are also 0-1 in district play. The two teams will be looking to see who can get a leg up in the district standings, and put themselves in a better spot.

The Trojans’ offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, scoring 20 or more points in each of their last five games. They also did so in their season opener and have averaged 28 points per game on the season, which is the exact amount of points Maud has allowed this season.

This week, Dave Campbell’s has the Trojans as a nine-point underdog this week, giving Maud the upper-hand. This is the only single-digit prediction of the week, and has the recipe for a great game. Will Cumby be able to grab their first district win of the season?
