After what felt like an eternity waiting for the Texas High School Football season, it’s here and it’s flying by. It may seem like it was just yesterday that the season was started, and here we are, already at the halfway point of the 2022 season.

This week is a light one for Hopkins County teams, as two of the three teams are off this week. Even then, let’s look at where each team sits in this final week of September, before entering the back half of the season and spooky season.

Sulphur Springs: Bye

The first five weeks of the season couldn’t have gone much better for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats. Despite not getting much attention from outside sources, the Wildcats have started to garner the attention from people outside of Hopkins County.

After their huge 24-6 Homecoming win over Liberty-Eylau last week, Sulphur Springs head coach Brandon Faircloth was named Dave Campbell’s 4A coach of the week. The team not only scored 24 unanswered points, but picked up their fourth win of the season, hitting an impressive 4-1 mark at the halfway point.

Now, with the non-district portion of their schedule behind them, the Wildcats will get an opportunity for some much needed rest. Not only will they get the chance to rest, they will also get a full extra week to prepare for their district opener against Community.

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats may have entered the season flying under the radar, but that has certainly changed after their 4-1 start. Dave Campbell’s picked the Wildcats to finish last in their district before the season began.

That continued into the season, as Sulphur Springs was only favored to win twice this season, once in the season opener against Jacksonville and again last week, after racking up a 3-1 record in their first four games.

After opening the season ranked close to No. 70 in the state, the Wildcats enter their bye week ranked No. 32 According to Dave Campbell’s. We will see how high they continue to climb if they are able to continue their winning ways.

Como-Pickton vs Quinlan Boles

The Como-Pickton Eagles are in need of another win to jolt them back to where they want to be, and this week might be the perfect chance for them to do just that. After starting their season 1-1, the Eagles have since lost their last three matches, though they have been against strong competition.

The streak started with a road trip to 3A Queen City, where they fell by a final score of 51-6. After that, they played host to Tom Bean, and started the game with a tight 6-6 first quarter.

Tom Bean went on to outscore the Eagles 16-6 in the second quarter, which led them to a 30-18 victory. Next, Como-Pickton traveled to Bogota to face Rivercrest for their district opener. Rivercrest played a strong game, defeating the Eagles 27-6.

Now, the Eagles get a chance to play a district match at home, and they do so against a team who is in a similar situation. Quinlan Boles is 2-3 this season, but have been outscored by their opponents to the tune of 125-93.

They’ve also lost each of their last two matchups, falling at home to Celeste 42-28 and losing again at home, this time to Alba-Golden in their district opener, losing 35-12. Could this be Como-Pickton’s chance to put an end to their losing streak and get back to .500 in district play?

Dave Campbell’s currently have the Eagles as a 13-point underdog, though they have won while being the underdog once already. In their Week 2 matchup against Detroit they were seven-point underdogs, and went on to win the game by more than three touchdowns.

Will The Eagles once again be able to pull off an upset and get back to .500 in district play?

Cumby: Bye

Much like Sulphur Springs, the Cumby Trojans receive their bye at the halfway point in the season. After starting their season 0-2, Cumby bounced back with a pair of huge home wins, beating Mercy Culture Prep and Tyler All Saints by a combined score of 74-0.

Last week, the Trojans once again hit the road, going up against a fellow 2-2 team in the Trenton Tigers. Cumby scored first, getting out to a quick 8-0 lead on the road.

Cumby continued to keep it close in the first half, even leading 16-12 in the second quarter. Despite their ability to keep it close early, Trenton would go on to run away with it, putting them away by a final score of 54-22.

Now with this week off, the Trojans will get a week to rest, and also an extra week to prepare for their district opener against Detroit next week. It could be the perfect chance for the Trojans to get back to .500 on the season, and open district play with a win, as Detroit currently sits with a winless record of 0-4.

So far this year, Cumby is 2-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, though they will be looking to change that in their district opening road trip. The Trojans have been able to keep it close in all five games they have played in and will be looking to get back in the win column next week, when they open district play.
