Week 5 Hopkins County Football Preview

One month of the Texas High School Football season is in the books. Every team in Hopkins County has at least one win, and teams are starting to fire on all cylinders, as we reach the middle part of the season. With certain teams already beginning district play, others will be looking to fine tune their game with one final match before the games start to effect their potential playoff positioning.
Sulphur Springs vs Liberty-Eylau (Homecoming)
Coming into the 2022 season, most people looked as this fall as a new beginning for the Sulphur Springs Wildcats. One month into the season, it has proven to be exactly the new beginning they needed, as the Wildcats are 3-1, ranked No. 33 in the state (according to Dave Campbell’s) and off to the best start they’ve had since 2018.
Sulphur Springs opened their season with a pair of home wins, beating Jacksonville 21-6, before getting a 34-17 win over Mount Pleasant. Their one loss this season came in their road opener, when they fell 34-21 to Hallsville.
Despite losing by two scores, they had a huge 75-yard touchdown called back with 1:57 left, which would have made it a one-score game with time to try to get the ball back and attempt to tie it up or even win the game.
The Wildcats didn’t let the loss get them down, as they hit the road the following week and dominated Van Alstyne in a 45-15 win. They got out to a quick 21-0 lead and never let their foot off the gas, putting them in a great spot as they enter Week 5.
This week is a big one for Sulphur Springs. Not only are they back at home for their final non-district game, against a 4-0 Liberty-Eylau Leopards team, but it is also Homecoming for the Wildcats. With a chance to take a 4-1 record into their bye week, Sulphur Springs would surely feel great going into district play in October.

This week, the Wildcats are a 6-point favorite according to Dave Campbell’s, marking the first time since Week 1 against Jacksonville in which they were the favorite. Their record on the season is 1-0 when favored, and 2-1 when picked as an underdog.
Como-Pickton @ Bogota Rivercrest
The Como-Pickton Eagles are back on the road this week, as they face Bogota Rivercrest in their district opener. After a pair of tough losses in their final two outings, the Eagles will be looking to replicate the success they had in Week 2 when they beat Detroit 38-14 in their one win this season.
While the Eagles are only 1-3 to start the season, they still have plenty of opportunities to turn their season around. Back in each the 2019 and 2020 seasons, the Eagles were under .500 going into district play, before finishing the season strong and earning playoff berths in each season.
They will certainly be looking to do the same thing this season, and a win in the district opener could go a long way towards doing that. This week, Dave Campbell’s have the Eagles as a 36-point underdog. If they were to pull out the win, it would make the biggest upset of any Hopkins County team this season.
Cumby @ Trenton
After dropping the first two games of their season, the Cumby Trojans enter Week 5 with a ton of momentum. Cumby bounced back with a pair of homes wins in Week 3 and Week 4, beating Mercy Culture Prep and Tyler All Saints by a combined score of 74-0.
Now with their record back to the .500 mark, Cumby has one final non-district game to make some final adjustments before entering the back part of their season. They do so on the road, against a Trenton Tigers team who is also 2-2.
This week will also prove as a chance for the Trojans to get their first road win of the season, as Dave Campbell’s currently has Cumby as an eight-point favorite, making them the largest favorite of the week for a Hopkins County team. The win would be a huge one, making them 3-2 and on a three-game winning streak heading into district play.
