We are three weeks into the high school football season. College football has been back for a week, and the NFL season kicks off tonight. It’s safe to say, football is all the way back.

This week all three Hopkins County teams are once again back in action and will be looking for all three teams to grab a win for the first time this season. Without further ado, let’s take a look at who each of the Hopkins County teams will face this week.

Sulphur Springs @ Hallsville

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2022 season. They opened their season with a pair of home games, against Jacksonville and Mt. Pleasant, and walked away from those games with a pair of wins.

The Wildcats have looked great on both sides of the ball, with the offense averaging 27.5 points per game, while the defense has allowed just 11.5 points per game so far. Outscoring their opponents 55-23, it’s safe to say the the Wildcats will hope to keep their hot start going.

Sulphur Springs will have their hands full this week, as they hit the road to face a Hallsville team who is also 2-0. The key to the Bobcats’ success this season has been their offense, as they have scored 93 points through their first two games.

While the offense has scored a ton of points, opposing teams have also been able to find the end zone as well. Hallsville held on to a close 44-41 win against Terrell in Week 1, before beating Henderson 49-35 at home last week.

While the Wildcats defense has been terrific so far, this week could be a great test for them. Averaging 46.5 points per game through the first two weeks, Hallsville will give Sulphur Springs a chance to prove they can stop even the most high-powered offenses they have to face.

The Wildcats were a 10-point underdog against Mt. Pleasant last week, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Despite being able to pull off the 34-17 win, they still find themselves as an underdog this week, this time by 11 points.

Will Sulphur Springs once again be able to prove the experts wrong?

Como-Pickton @ Queen City

The Como-Pickton Eagles enter Week 3 of the season feeling good, after picking up their first win of the season last week. The Eagles dropped the season opener against Simms Bowie, but bounced back with a big 38-14 win over Detroit in their first road match, and will be looking to do the same again this week.

Week 3 could prove to be a great test for the Eagles, as they once again hit the road, this time to face Queen City. Queen City is a bigger school, being in 3A Division 2, and enter the week with a 1-1 record.

Queen City’s win came against Rivercrest in the season opener, who they beat 38-28. Como-Pickton will also face Rivercrest in their district opener in a few weeks, and this match against Queen City could be a great test for them to see how they match up against a team who beat Rivercrest by double-digits.

Como-Pickton, much like Sulphur Springs, were considered the underdogs last week, but were able to walk away with the victory. They find themselves in the exact same situation this week, as Dave Campbell’s currently has Queen City as a 22-point favorite.

Will the Eagles be able to shock the experts and put a huge statement win on their resume?

Cumby vs Mercy Culture Prep

At this point in the season, the Cumby Trojans are the only Hopkins County team to have yet to play a game in front of their home crowd. The Sulphur Springs Wildcats have already done so twice, and the Como-Pickton Eagles did so in their season opener.

That changes this week, as the Cumby Trojans are finally ready for their home opener. After starting the season off with a pair of road losses, perhaps getting to play in front of their home crowd is exactly what the Trojans need to pick up that first win of the season.

They will be hosting a Mercy Culture Prep team who has scored 14 points in each of their first two games, but have given up a total of 53 points along the way. This could be a great chance for Cumby to pick up their first win and gain some momentum as they enter the middle part of their schedule.

This week marks the first time the Trojans have been favored by Dave Campbell’s, as they are currently a five-point favorite in this home match. Cumby has played two close matches this far, and will certainly be looking to walk away with the upper hand Friday night.
