AT HOME WITH KAYLA PRICE 8/5: Let’s Talk about You and I

Let’s Talk About You and IAny grammarian that read the title of this article are feeling the equivalent of fingernails scratching across a chalkboard.  I hope those sweet keepers of the language take the time to read the article so that they know I am trying to help! For whatever reason, I believe someone said it was more fancy (yep, that usage may have sent a few screeching sounds to folks) to use “I” instead of “me”, much of society is choosing to incorrectly use “I” when they should properly use “me.”I am not always the best at using the correct word (just ask my proofreaders), but this is an easy one!  There isn’t even an exception to the rule! Here is how simple it is to know which word is correct.  Let’s pretend you are about to say (or write) this sentence, “My husband and I/me went to the store.”   How do you know whether to use I or me?  Just say the sentence without the other person.   Would you say, “I went to the store,” or “Me went to the store.”?  Obviously, you would say, “I went to the store.”Now add the other person back in.  “My husband and I went to the store,” would be the correct usage. An example of when to use me instead of I would be in this sentence.  “Come visit Mike and me.”  You would never say, “Come visit I,” so just because you add another person in the sentence doesn’t mean you should change to me.Make sense?I hear the misuse so often that I am afraid it will become acceptable. My proofreaders and I would love to hear your comments on the me/I debacle.
