As we sit amidst one of the hottest summers in years, the return of high school football might be the furthest thing on some peoples minds, but rest assured, it is on the way. With just a few weeks until the Sulphur Springs Wildcats kick their season off, here at Front Porch News we are going to begin previewing their opponents for this fall.

Day-by-day we are going to look at each of the teams the Wildcats will face this season, including how they have faired over the past couple seasons. With all of the introduction out of the way, lets take a look at who Sulphur Springs will be opening their season against.

Week 1, Jacksonville

Sulphur Springs will get the luxury of starting their season on their home turf and will undoubtedly be looking do so with a win. Jacksonville could be the perfect opponent for the Wildcats to begin their new campaign against, as they are also in need of turning things around.

Jacksonville was able to walk out of the 2021 season with just one win, which came against Hallsville (a team we will get to in a few days) in their district opener. One of the things working in Jacksonville’s favor is the fact they are returning some of their key players.

They will be returning both their leading passer Ryan McCown, as well as their leading receiver Devin McCuin, who averaged over 100 receiving yards per game.

The Wildcats will be looking to pick up a win in their season opener for the first time since 2018, looking to snap a three-year stint in which they fell in Week One. A win in their season opener could be huge for Sulphur Springs, setting the tone in what feels like a brand new chapter in Wildcats football.

With a new coaching staff, new district and a new classification, Sulphur Springs has the opportunity to start something new on a strong note.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for our preview for Week 2 against Mount Pleasant.
