The Sulphur Springs Wildcats and Lady Cats soccer program held their annual summer camp this week. The camp has seen larger and larger numbers in each of the last few years, with them once again seeing their highest turnout to date.
“We had a record of 120 last year and we broke it with 152 this year,” Sulphur Springs Wildcats head coach Alexi Upton said. “We did a good job of promoting it within the community and the community did a great job of coming out and participating.”
“It’s good to see that we’re actually growing,” Upton added. “We’ve gotten to the point that we’re seeing the development of kids and the quality of soccer here in town.”
The camp was held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, with participants of all age groups. Upton also spoke more about the importance of growing the sport and improving the quality of play in younger players and the affect that could have on the high school program.

“We’re seeing kids with a really high level of play already and they’re only in the third or fourth grade.” With the camps growing larger in size each year and the quality of play continuing to improve, the camps are proving to be a very positive impact on the community.
Upton also took the time to give credit to a local business for their involvement. “It was a good camp, we had the Legendairy Heifer brought the ice cream truck out everyday and we really appreciate them.”
Upton was very pleased with the camp, both in terms of turnout and the quality they showed this week. The summer is hardly over for the Wildcats soccer program, however, as they have more games to be played in July.
Tuesday July 12 and Tuesday July 25 Sulphur Springs will host soccer games in the evenings. Stay tuned for updates and coverage of those.
