As we sit in the middle of a stretch of 100 degree weather days, the idea of football being played might be the further thing from your mind, but rest assured, the days of spending your Friday night’s watching high school football are right around the corner. All three Hopkins County football teams are less than two months away from kicking their seasons off, with each of them opening their seasons Friday, Aug. 26.

Sulphur Springs

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats are the one Hopkins County school who will be kicking their season off with a home game, as they play host to Jacksonville. The Wildcats will be looking to open their season with a win for the first time since 2018, when they won each of their first five games.

Sulphur Springs will be facing a Jacksonville team who went 1-9 a year ago, with their one win being at home against Hallsville, beating them 49-20. The Wildcats will get a chance to face Hallsville just two weeks later, hoping to roll into district play with multiple wins under their belt.

It’s a new era of Wildcat football, with new head coach Brandon Faircloth at the helm and a brand new district, in a new classification. Sulphur Springs will be looking to open the new chapter on a strong note and will certainly have the opportunity to do so, after not having a winning season since 2018.

Como-Pickton

For the third season in a row, the Como-Pickton Eagles will be opening their season against James Bowie and they will be looking to have similar outcomes to their last two outings. In each of the past two years, Como-Pickton picked up opening week wins against James Bowie, beating them 17-0 in 2020 and 20-8 in 2021.

The Eagles also have one more familiar foe in their non-district schedule. After three road games to open the year, Como-Pickton will host Tom Bean for their home opener in week four.

Last season Como-Pickton beat Tom Bean by a final score of 31-6. James Bowie and Tom Bean were their only two wins last season and they will be looking to beat the pair of teams to jumpstart an improved 2022 season.

Cumby

As for the Cumby Trojans, they will be facing a new foe in Week One, as they travel to Tom Bean for their season opener. Cumby will be looking to pick up a win in their season opener for the first time since the 2019 season, when they beat Quitman by a final score of 48-18.

The Trojans have a number of new teams on their schedule, including Union Grove, Calvary Christian and All Saints Episcopal. A set of new teams could be exactly what the Trojans are looking for, after going 3-12 over the last two seasons.

Cumby will be looking to open their season on a strong note, before opening district play. Their district schedule consists of matchups against Detroit, Maud, Linden-Kildare, James Bowie and Clarksville.
