AT HOME WITH KAYLA PRICE 6/17: Graduation
  • PublishedJune 24, 2022

GraduationCongratulations to all the high school and college graduates among us!  May and June are filled with the new beginnings that a graduation offers.  Some graduates may continue on with their education while some may choose to join the workforce.  Still other brave souls will join the military in order to serve our country.Do you remember the excitement you felt when you graduated from high school?  If being honest, I kind of thought I had arrived.  I was an adult in my mind!  Of course, my fun was very short-lived as I started college the following week and had a part-time job working for my dad.  Would that be considered the best of both worlds?Recently, I ran across my mom’s high school ring which is the prettiest class ring that I have ever seen.  I love the all-gold ring with the SS shield on the top.  It almost looks like a ring of a “super student” as the letters remind me of Superman for some reason!I had never seen my mom’s high school class ring until I was in college.  From the first moment I saw it, I was in love.  I asked my mom if I could wear it, which she allowed.  I was so proud of that ring.  It would often receive compliments because it is just that sort of ring! Not only did that ring represent an accomplishment in my mom’s life, but one that will be paid forward for generations to come.  More so back then, not everyone graduated from high school.  Many students were needed to run farms and earn money to help support their families.  My mom and her sisters were all encouraged by their parents to get an education.  Because that generation worked so hard to go through high school and to graduate college, it made it easier for my generation to do the same.I don’t know if class rings are still the big deal that they were back in my high school days, but if so, lots of students just ordered their rings and graduates have started wearing their rings facing outward (so that others may read it), from facing inward prior to graduating.  Just as the placement of the tassel on a mortarboard signifies if the wearer is a graduate, the alignment of high school and college rings signifies the same.  These placements are also a long tradition. As graduates venture out to their next chapter, they need to know that nothing will seem easy.  Decisions, classes, work, etc. will present challenges and changes, but each step taken will be part of the ongoing education we all receive in life.  Each day should be approached with inquisitiveness, appreciation, and happiness.  Like any adventure…we get out what we put in.  I say, “go forth and conquer!”  Be bold.  Be brave.  But most importantly, be you!
