The tennis courts in Sulphur Springs have been some of the best in all of East Texas for quite some time now. Even larger schools like Highland Park, Plano West and Allen have all chosen to play their playoff matches here.

Recently, they became even more appealing, after resurfacing was done. The new resurfaced courts (as seen above) look brand new and will be an even bigger attraction for players and teams wanting to play on the nicest courts available.

“It was already one of the top places in East Texas,” Sulphur Springs Head Tennis Coach Tony Martinez said. “Some of the top schools in Texas, they just want to play their playoff matches here, so that’s been part of the beauty of it.”

This weekend the new courts will see some action, as they will be the host of a Universal Tennis Rating doubles tournament Friday. The adult portion of the doubles tournament will be for money, with a total of $300 in prize money up for grabs.

Multiple teams are already formed, consisting of both local players, as well as players from the metroplex. The adult division is both men and women, with teams able to use any combination of men and/or women.

There will also be a high school division as well as a junior high division, giving players of all ages a chance at showing off their skills. Martinez also mentioned how much the sport is growing in the area, with players of even younger ages starting to show interest and enhance their skills.

“Tennis has grown here, our camps have been growing,” Martinez said. “We had nearly 80 kids at our camp, compared to 10-12 kids when I first started. We’re having more and more every year.”

“We’re trying to have more of a year-round program for younger kids.”

Come out Friday evening to see the new resurfaced courts, as well as see talented players of all age groups in the tournament.
