AT HOME WITH KAYLA PRICE 6/10: Platinum Jubilee
  • PublishedJune 10, 2022

Why the Jubilee MattersAs the Queen of England celebrated 70 years as the reigning Monarch of England, I was excited to celebrate from afar. My husband often reminds me that he doesn’t have an interest in it, but I think we all should.Just as America is the great melting pot, England’s Commonwealth once had the tagline of “the sun never sets on the Commonwealth,” meaning that it had member countries that covered the globe…it was always daylight in at least one of its member countries. Many of us here in the melting pot probably originated from a Commonwealth member or former member. I think of many friends I have had through the years who were from India. They spoke perfect Queen’s English and enjoyed tea which shows the influence Britain still has on that country. Our country was founded by the British subjects, and through the years we have continued to be shaped by the influence of English values. Not only is our language similar, but our legal system is as well. For those of us growing older and/or interested in gerontology, the fact that this 96 year-old-woman is still a viable, active person capable of running the affairs of the monarchy is pretty impressive. I, for one, may take up riding horses and a daily Dubonnet cocktail before dinner if it will pay off for me as well as it has for Queen Elizabeth.Of course, I am a tried-and-true Anglophile with a long list of must-visit places to experience in England. I feel more at home wandering London streets than Dallas streets for the simple fact that London is such a walkable city with so many recognizable monuments, landmarks and neighborhoods.I am not blind to the complaints and problems with the monarchy, but I also see the positive impact it has as well. What I do admire is the steadfast reliability of the Queen through the past 70 years. She has rarely been touched personally by scandal, while many of those around her have succumbed.I think the take-away here for people from around the globe is how to maintain our own personal dignity in the face of modern-day problems. Queen Elizabeth has managed to maintain her standards regardless of the situation or changes in society. Her rumored motto of “never complain; never explain” should be adopted by every movie star, professional athlete, and celebrity. Of course, then TMZ wouldn’t have a show.Although many people see the privilege her royal life has afforded her, I doubt any of us would be willing to sacrifice our freedom for a life of commitments and requirements lived on such a public stage. As they say, “all that glitters is not gold.”Sadly, I did not get a chance to watch the Platinum Jubilee festivities, but very soon I plan to enjoy a hot cup of Earl Grey tea and an English biscuit or two while I snuggle up to watch clips and highlights! God Save the Queen!
