Wildcats look good in home 7-on-7

Wildcats look good in home 7-on-7

The days of summer are here, the spring sports have wrapped up, students are out for summer break, and fans of high school sports are getting ready to hype themselves up for another fall season. Luckily, fans of Sulphur Springs football have something to keep them busy and something to give them a glimpse into their near future, 7-on-7 football.

The Wildcats hosted a pair of teams Monday, Texas High and Mount Pleasant. In the format, the two teams traded turns trying to score on one another, with Sulphur Springs offense going against one of their defenses, and one of their offenses going against the Sulphur Springs defense.

On one side of the field the junior varsity teams got their reps in, with the varsity squads going simultaneously on the other side of the field. In 7-on-7, teams start on the 40-yard line and are only giving two first downs, putting pressure on the offense to try to get into the end zone as quickly as possible. It is an exercise that emphasizes passing and route-running, as well as giving opposing secondaries opportunities to work on their game and try to stop the other teams passing game.

The Wildcats first tired their hand against Texas High, a team who went an impressive 12-1 last season. Both the offense and the defense showed flashes, though Texas High got the better of them. On the other side of the field the junior varsity looked great, scoring with ease and showing glimpses of a team who can succeed on both sides of the field.

Next Sulphur Springs went up against Mount Pleasant, a team they will get to face again in the regular season. In this one, the Wildcats came out firing on offense, scoring on four consecutive possessions. Each of the four scores came from quarterback Brady Driver to receiver CJ Williams, as the two looked to be in sync on another level.

The offense did a good job with quick passes, moving the ball closer to the end zone. Once in scoring position, Driver would find Williams, on a number of different routes, all resulting in a score. The two teams ended in a tie, as they matched each other every step of the way.

Driver, once again, found Williams on what was arguably the most impressive play of the night. On the first play of a drive, Williams beat his man and found himself open down the field, Driver hit his go-to-man in stride, putting the ball where only he could get it, resulting in a touchdown.

Wildcats fans will get plenty of opportunities to watch their team in action this summer, with more 7-on-7 games being held at home. Stay tuned to Front Porch News for updates on when they play again, as well as coverage of them.
