On a family trip to a Mexican border town, a well to do family helping at an orphanage is changed when tragedy strikes. Alex, the father of the family, is not satisfied with the report from authorities and chooses instead to delve into, his father-in-law’s past in order to discover the truth and the why behind their family’s misfortune.

While digging into the past of his father-in-law Joe, Alex discovers that the man he knows is not at all who he seems to be and that it could be possible for Joe to have led a different life before he became his wife’s father.

Alex’s uncovering of the past takes him on a journey across the country and back down into Mexico where those closest to the story end up on the wrong side of the equation. Death and more questions follow Alex as he tries to find out who his father-in-law really is.

Alex must also be strong for his wife, daughters, and mother-in-law as they each face the truth of their time in Mexico and grapple with their new reality. Instead of just letting go Alex finds himself embroiled in the lies of the past attempting to uncover the truth.

This fast-paced journey through the past, teaches Alex that not everything is as it would seem. The money given to him by Joe, he discovers, has no origins that he could find at first and may be tied to what happened to his father-in-law in Mexico. Each new discovery leads to more questions for Alex that he is unsure if he really wants to find the answers too.

Family Money was an entertaining read with good twists and turns, that kept the reader on their toes wanting to find out more about Joe and his past. The decisions that the characters make set up “what if” scenarios in the reader’s mind but the storyline continues and leaves some of the past behind.

I listened to this story on Audible and it was easy to follow along. The characters and story line were understandable without having to see the words on paper. The author did a good job of building the suspense and developing the characters throughout the book, which led to an exciting finish.
