SSMS 8th graders get airport tour as reading prize
  • PublishedMay 20, 2022

At Sulphur Springs Middle School, teacher Bryan Jacobs told his 8th grade reading classes that if they met their reading goal, he would take them to the airport and show them some airplanes.  There are usually five or six students who meet the goal in each grading period.

After learning of going to the airport, 45 kids read the books and met their goals!

So, on Wednesday, Jacobs took his students to Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport KSLR to enjoy the sights.

Students enjoyed seeing several planes and had a hot dog lunch.

Featured planes included:

  • Ben Hines with a Mooney and a Cessna 150
  • Citabria, American Legend will have a couple of Legend Cubs
  • Bryan Jacobs  with a Harmon Rocket

At the end of their visit, Bryan put SSMS school principal Joe Boedigheimer in the Rocket and the students saw their principal and teacher fly a pattern.

“[It’s] just a bunch of kids having fun, getting outside and away from computer screens and learning about airplanes,” noted local aviator Ben Scarborough.

Airport director and Texas Municipal Airport director of the year Joey Baker said KSLR always delights to welcome students to the facilities.

“We love to have school kids learn about aviation,” he said. “Each of them is a potential new aviator.”

Ben Scarborough contributed to this report.
