Tornadoes rip through East, Central Texas

Multiple tornadoes tore through Northeast Texas on March 21, according to the National Weather Service.
Tornadoes were spotted near metro areas of Dallas-Fort Worth. Residents of Collin County who resided in the cities of Plano, Carrollton, and Frisco reported seeing rotational storms, according to Dallas-Fort Worth Scanner.
In more rural areas, a tornado decimated homes and businesses in Jacksboro in Jack County, according to the NWS. Portions of Jacksboro ISD, including the high school and elementary school, received damage, according to the Associated Press. No one was killed or injured, but Jacksboro ISD will remain closed the rest of the week, according to the district’s website.
Preliminary storm damage surveys by the NWS report tornado-like damage in the following Northeast Texas locations:
- Bowie (Montague County)
- Era (Cooke County)
- Grayson County
- Paradise (Wise County)
- Carrollton (Collin County)
- Fort Worth (Tarrant County)
- Santo (Palo Pinto County)
Preliminary storm damage surveys by the NWS report tornado-like damage in the following Southeast Texas locations:
- Groesbeck (Limestone County)
- Mart (McLennan County)
- Rosebud (Falls County)
- Buckholts (Milam County)
- Bell County
In all, NWS issued 56 tornado warnings across Texas on March 21, with a few coming just after midnight on March 22. The only day that rivals this was August 27, 2017 and these warnings were associated with Hurricane Harvey, NWS noted.
High winds from 60-70 mph not confirmed to be tornadic were reported in or near: Elgin, Conroe, Willis, SugarLand and Cinco Ranch, NWS radar noted.
Other severe weather in Northeast Texas included high winds, hail, lightening and flooding. Hail reports showed that hail reached up to approximately .75 inches in diameter in the central Texas area, NWS said.
Tornado warnings remain in effect for: Jasper, Hardin, Newton and Tyler counties until 2 p.m. on March 22. “An isolated severe threat continues early this morning,” the NWS Severe Weather Prediction Center noted.
