The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Hallsville Tuesday, looking to end their regular season on a high note. Before the game Sulphur Springs honored their seniors, before they took on Hallsville, looking to finish as the third seed in the district.

The Wildcats knew they would have a tough test on their hands, after they fell to Hallsville 3-0 the first time they played each other. Tuesday’s game was a tight defensive battle in the first half, with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first 40 minutes of play.

Edgar Salazar put the Wildcats on the board first, scoring a goal early in the second half. Salazar was helped out by Angel Andino who picked up the assist on the play.

Sulphur Springs continued to play great defense, keeping Hallsville off the board for most of the game. With just minutes left, Hallsville was able to tie things up 1-1, forcing overtime and giving themselves a chance to take the third seed in the district.

The Bobcats also found the back of the net in overtime, taking a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats did their best to fight back but were never able to tie things up, losing by a final score of 2-1 despite never trailing in regulation.

The loss drops Sulphur Springs’ record to 6-6 in district play. Sulphur Springs and Hallsville each finished 6-6 in district, with the tiebreaker going to Hallsville since they took each of the head-to-head matchups.

While the Wildcats are still waiting to see who their playoff opponent will be, they are scheduled to have a playoff warm up match Monday at Lindale. Continued coverage of the Wildcats soccer team and their postseason run will be published on Front Porch News.
