Street maintenance list for Summer 2022 revealed
The city of Sulphur Springs has revealed which streets will be undertaken as part of the street maintenance project (previously known as the summer paving project) during the summer of 2022.
The list to be paid for entirely by the city’s maintenance fee includes all or portions of:
- Jackson
- Kasie
- Lee
- Fore
- Forrest Lane
- Garrison
- Glover
- Commercial Service (various repairs)
- Como
- Dabbs
- Drexel
- Fisher
The list to be paid for by general city expenses includes all or portions of:
- Ardis
- Azalea
- Bonner
- California
- Charles
- Lee (complete 2021 project)
- League (complete 2021 project)
“The Street Maintenance Fee (SMF) has helped the city make considerable progress toward improving the 92.5 miles of streets in the city,” said council member Jay Julian.
Julian said he believes the SMF has more than doubled the linear feet of road the city is able to repair in 2022.
“From 2019 to today, citizens are able to observe and drive on tangible results of what the city is doing with the SMF. The deterioration of the city’s streets did not happen over night, and it is going to take a considerable amount of time to get the streets where we want them,” Julian said.
Julian stated that he believes the 2022 plan is “right on course.”
However, city finance director Lesa Smith and Julian have both expressed concern before that the SMF will not hold as strong against inflation.
“Ten dollars today does not buy what $10 dollars bought this time last year, and as inflation rises our dollars buy less and less,” Julian noted. “Inflation impacts city and citizen alike.”
