Wildcats pick up huge win over Mount Pleasant

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Mount Pleasant Friday for a huge matchup. Friday’s matchup was not only a chance for the Wildcats to put themselves at the top of the district, but it was also Senior Night for the Wildcats.

Sulphur Springs got off to a very strong start, dominating the Tigers in the opening frame. The Wildcats, who are known for their strong starts, were able to take a 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a much closer affair, though the Wildcats were still in control the entire way. Parker Whisenhunt came up with a huge play to close the half for Sulphur Springs, draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 33-16 lead.

Mount Pleasant stepped things up a notch in the second half, coming out with a very strong third quarter. The Tigers outscored Sulphur Springs 15-11 in the frame, but Sulphur Springs still held on to a 44-31 lead.

Mount Pleasant fought hard in the fourth quarter and even put themselves in a decent position. After trailing by double-digits the entire second half, the Tigers got the score within seven points. 

Despite Mount Pleasant putting up a great fourth quarter, Sulphur Springs was able to finish the game strong. The Wildcats executed late in the game, pulling out the win by a final score of 61-52.

Justin Haire led the way, having a great outing in his final home game as a Wildcat. Haire had a team-high 18 points as well as a team-high 16 rebounds. 

Just behind him was Kordrick Turner who had 16 points on an efficient 7-11 from the field. Turner also made two of his three free throw attempts.

Branson Lynn was the next leading scorer, finishing with eight points. Caleb Alexander and Parker Whisenhunt each had seven points. Alexander also dished out four assists, while Whisenhunt pulled in six rebounds.

“This was huge. This crowd was amazing, from the freshman game all the way up and that’s a testament to [the fans] we appreciate you guys coming out,” head coach Brandon Shaver said after the game. “It’s fun for our boys to get to experience this because it gets us ready for the playoffs, that’s a playoff game tonight.”

“It’s awesome, this is what we’ve worked for all year and it’s fun to be able to see all the hard work that these guys have put in.”

The win puts Sulphur Springs at 9-2 in district and tied for first place with Hallsville in the district. The Wildcats have their final regular season game of the year Tuesday on the road against Texas High.
