Miller Grove picks up pair of home wins, state cross country team honored after game

The Miller Grove Hornets and Lady Hornets hosted Savoy Monday, looking to pick up a pair of wins. The last time the teams faced off the Lady Hornets walked away with a 41-32 win, while the boys team won by a final score of 65-15.
Lady Hornets
The Lady Hornets went first, setting the tone with a huge opening frame. Despite only having five girls to play with, Miller Grove controlled the game from the opening tip, getting out to a huge 18-2 lead.
Miller Grove continued to dominate into the second quarter, outscoring Savoy 15-7 in the second frame. The third quarter belonged to the Lady Hornets as well, as they added another five points to their lead, before winning the game by a final score of 56-22.
Lainy Burnett was the leading scorer for Miller Grove, finishing with an impressive 14-point outing. Right behind her was Ava Sotelo, who had 12 points in the 30-point win.
Next were Anna Culbertson and Page Neidhart who had 11 points and 10 points respectively. Jaci Roberson barely missed the double-digit threshold, scoring nine points.

Hornets
The Hornets followed up, looking to get out to the exact same start the Lady Hornets did. The Hornets were able to do just that, scoring the first 16 points of the game.
During their 16-0 run Landon Burnett played a huge role, racking up seven points in the first few minutes. The Miller Grove offense slowed down a bit in the back part of the frame, but they were still able to take a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Despite holding a huge lead after just eight minutes of action, the Hornets never let their foot off the gas, coming back with an even stronger second quarter. Miller Grove outscored Savoy 20-4 in the frame, extending their lead to 42-12 at the end of the first half.
Miller Grove opened the second half the exact same way they opened the first half, by going on a 13-0 run. Burnett scored 11 of the 13 points, helping the Hornets push their lead to 55-12.
At that point Miller Grove was able to coast for the remainder of the game, though the damage was already done. Savoy added another 10 points to their total, as the Hornets walked away with a 71-22 win.
Burnett was the leading scorer, walking away with a huge 27-point, nine-rebound performance. Tanner Hensley was the next leading scorer, finishing with nine points and three rebounds.
Kavan Smith and Lexton Sly each had seven points. Sly was also about to dish out four assists. Ryker Haivala had six points and five assists, while Jagger Qualls had six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Ethan George had five points in the contest, while Jacob George and Bradley Nordin each had two points. Lance Davis added three rebounds, a pair of deflections and one assist.
The win pushed the Hornets record to 22-9 on the year, and keeps them tied for first place in their district with a 10-1 district record.
After the game, the Miller Grove cross country team was honored for their state championship. The team members were awarded their state championship ring, while head cross country coach Cody Walker spoke about the teams success.
Both the Lady Hornets and Hornets are back in action Tuesday with a road trip to Fannindal. The Lady Hornets are set to go first at 6 p.m. with the Hornets to follow.
