Saltillo Lions, Lady Lions pick up wins over Avery

The Saltillo Lions and Lady Lions each hosted Avery Monday night, looking to pick up district wins.

Lady Lions

The Lady Lions went first, setting the tone from the very beginning. Saltillo got out to a quick lead, outscoring Avery 15-8 in the opening frame.

With a seven-point lead, the Lady Lions continued to dominate, having their best frame of the night int he second quarter. Saltillo outscored Avery 19-5, adding another 14 points to their lead before halftime.

Avery came back with their best quarter of the night to begin the second half, though Saltillo was still in control of the game. Avery scored 15 points in the frame, but Saltillo scored 18 points, before winning the game by a final score of 64-35.

Gabby Ross was the leading scorer for Saltillo, having a strong 16-point outing. Yadhira Alonso and Allie Lane were right behind her, putting up 14 points each.

Maysen Pipkin added nine points her of own, while Julianna Giles had seven points and Ryleigh Redar had four points. The win pushed the Lady Lions record to 17-15 on the year and 5-3 in district play.

Lions 

The Lions followed the Lady Lions, opening their game in a very similar fashion. Saltillo came out the gate on fire, creating a 12-point 17-5 lead in the first quarter.

After a close second quarter in which Avery outscored Saltillo 19-16, the Lions answered back with a huge third quarter, adding another four points to their lead. The two teams matched each other for most of the final frame, as the Lions walked away with the 64-48 win.

Andrew Redburn and Coy Collins were the leading scorers for the Lions, scoring 18 points and 14 points respectively. Behind them were Colby McCoy and David Whitworth who each had 11 points.

Gunner Tarver scored four points for Saltillo, while Luke Ritter had two points. The win gets the Lions back to .500 at 15–15 and makes them an impressive 6-1 in district.

Saltillo will be back in action Tuesday night in a road match against Yantis. The junior varsity boys will go first at 4:30 p.m. with the Lady Lions and Lions varsity teams to follow. Coverage of the games will be provided on Front Porch News.
