The Sulphur Bluff Lady Bears hosted the Saltillo Lady Lions Monday, looking to extend their winning streak to five games. The Lady Bears were looking for a bit of revenge, as their last loss came at the hands of Saltillo, back on Dec. 30.

The game opened with a very tight opening frame, with neither team able to create any separation from the other. Both teams stayed neck-and-neck with each other, as the Lady Bears took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.

The second frame is when both teams picked things up offensively, with Sulphur Bluff more than doubling their point total. The Lady Bears had their best frame of the night, scoring 20 points, as they were able to push their lead to double-digits.

Coming out of the locker room with a 30-20 lead, Sulphur Bluff continued to play strong basketball to open the second half. The Lady Bears were once again able to outscore Saltillo in the frame, setting themselves up with a 41-28 lead entering the final frame.

Despite a big lead already, the Lady Bears never let their foot off the gas. Saltillo put up a strong fight, having their highest scoring total of the night, but Sulphur Bluff continued to play strong, winning the game by a final score of 59-48.

Skylar Stanley had yet another amazing outing for the Lady Bears, once again finishing with over 20 points and 20 rebounds. Her 26 points and 22 rebounds proved to be huge in the 11-point victory.

Also scoring in double-digits was Bailey Neal, who had 12 points and made all six of her free throw attempts. Neal also had eight rebounds, as well as one assist and one steal.

Emma Neal and Tori Raine had strong outing as well, as Neal had eight points and eight rebounds, while Raine had six points and 10 boards. Kaitlyn Brock added five points, as well as six assists and four steals, while BreAnna Stanley had two points, one steal and one rebound.

“This was a big win for us tonight, against a strong shooting steam,” head coach Zandra Peyton said. “The girls have set big goals for this season and each girl has a work ethic to match it.”

“The girls do a great job of being each other’s biggest fans,” Peyton added. “They are a really fun group to coach.”

The win makes the Lady Bears 5-2 in district play, putting them in solid position to still fight for the district championship. They return to action Tuesday with a road match against the Yantis Lady Owls at 5:30 p.m.

Coverage of the game will be provided on Front Porch News later this week.
