Miller Grove picks up pair of wins on Homecoming

The Miller Grove Hornets and Lady Hornets hosted Campbell for their homecoming games. With the crowd on their side, Miller Grove was looking to pick up a pair of wins and send the homecoming crowd home happy.
Miller Grove Lady Hornets
The Lady Hornets went first and got off to a bit of a slow start, though they were at a disadvantage. The Lady Hornets only had five players to play with, making their job that much tougher.
After a slow first quarter, Miller Grove kicked things into gear, having their best scoring frame of the night. The Lady Hornets scored 16 points in the frame, while only allowing six, building a 21-14 lead at the end of the first half.
The scoring did slow down a bit in the third for the Lady Hornets, as they were only able to score seven points in the frame. Campbell, on the other hand, scored 11 points in the quarter, cutting Miller Grove’s lead to 28-25.
Despite momentum and numbers working against them, the Lady Hornets put together a very strong final frame, putting Campbell’s chances of a comeback to an end. Miller Grove put up 11 points in the fourth quarter and only allowed one, winning the game by a final score of 39-26.
Anna Culbertson and Lainy Burnett were the leading scorers for Miller Grove, both finishing with 15 points. Burnett shot an efficient 5-8 from the free throw line, while Culbertson had 14 points in the second quarter alone.
Ava Sotelo had three points, while Allissa Sallee and Paige Neihart each had two points. “Our girls had to play with five. They played hard and kept it close,” head coach Blake Hill said.
“Anna gave us a spark with 14 of her 15 in the second quarter. We ask our kids to show up each day with great attitude and great effort. I think that was on full display last night.”

Miller Grove Hornets
The Hornets followed, looking to give the crowd just as good of a game. They were able to do exactly that, controlling the game handedly, as they went on to win by a final score of 54-37.
Tanner Hensley was the leading scorer, pacing the way with an impressive 19-point outing. Hensley also had five rebounds, three deflections, two steals and one assist.
Also scoring in double-digits was Bradley Nordin, who added 12 points of his own. Nordin also had three steals, as well as two deflections and one rebound.
Landon Burnett played a big role as well, scoring eight points while also grabbing a team-high six rebounds. Burnett had three deflections and took two chargers as well.
Lexton Sly had a strong showing, scoring seven points. Sly also had a team-high four assists, as well as three steals, two deflections and one board.
Ryker Haivala and Jagger Qualls each had three points, while Lance Davis and Ethan George each had one point. Jacob George filled the stat sheet as well, dishing out two assists, while grabbing two rebounds, taking two charges and forcing one steal.
The win improves the Hornets record to 15-9 and makes them 3-1 in district play. [adning id=”33207″]
