The Saltillo Lions went to Union Hill Friday, looking to pick up their fourth win in district play. After an up-and-down preseason, the Lions have bounced back with a strong start to district play.

The Lions got off to a strong start, getting out to an early lead. Saltillo scored 12 points in the opening frame, while holding Union Hill to nine points.

The second quarter is when Saltillo began to create some separation, both turning up the scorer while also picking things up defensively. The Lions outscored Union Hill 15-6 in the quarter, taking a 27-15 lead at the end of the first half.

Union Hill didn’t go down easy, however, as they put up their best quarter of the night to open the second half. For the first time all game Union Hill was able to outscore the Lions in the frame, cutting the deficit to 37-30, putting the game back within reach.

Saltillo never let themselves get down, however, as they ended the game with their best quarter of the night. The Lions put up a game-high 21 points in the frame, as they went on to win the game by a final score of 58-44.

Andrew Redburn was the leading scorer for Saltillo, as he finished with a very impressive 28 points. Also scoring in double-digits was David Whitworth who ended up with 13 points. Coy Collins added eight points of his own, while Gunner Tarver had six points and Colby McCoy had two points.

The win pushes the Lions record to 13-15 on the year, but makes them an impressive 4-1 in district play. They retune to action Tuesday with a home game against Avery. The varsity girls are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow. Coverage of the games will be provided on Front Porch News.
