The Sulphur Springs Wildcats soccer team had their first official preseason game Thursday, after playing in a number of scrimmages to prepare themselves. The Wildcats were going up against Mesquite Poteet, head coach Alexi Upton’s alma mater.
Sulphur Springs found themselves in trouble early, trailing 2-0 at the end of the first half. Poteet was able to get a pair of goals, one on a corner kick and one on a keeping error.
With a tough fight ahead of them, the Wildcats got to work in the second half, starting with a goal from Edgar Salazar. Salazar scored on an assist from Jose Rodriguez, putting the Wildcats within one point.

Later in the half it was Uriel Santacruz who found the back of the net, thanks to an assist from Angel Andino. Although Sulphur Springs was never able to score again, they prevented Poteet from doing so either, finishing with a 2-2 draw.
“It was fun to play my alma mater and enjoy that,” Upton said. “We gave up two goal early and then we fought well in the second half to get back in it.”
The Wildcats resume tournament action Friday, with a pair of games against Ennis and Crandall. Coverage of the games will be provided on Front Porch News.
