Work at Pacific Park

Work is underway for the next phase at Pacific Park. Last month crews poured a slab for the outdoor fitness area. This week the concrete has cured and they’re getting some work done before it gets cold. The fitness area was partially paid for through a series of grant, according to the city.

The National Fitness Foundation, CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital and Saputo provided funds totaling $75,000 to pay for community fitness. City manager Marc Maxwell said the city is grateful for these grant contributions and how they will affect local health outcomes.

“With our recent pandemic experience sedentary lifestyle is pronounced, and the importance of fitness is greater for all ages,” Maxwell said.

The third phase of the park, playground areas, are in the early stages, Maxwell noted. Playground equipment has been ordered and is en route. The city plans to locate the playground at the northeast corner of the park nearest Carter and Martin Luther King Jr. streets.

In a fourth phase, the city intends to seek approval from its council to order restroom equipment at the January regular council meeting.

The fifth phase of park development will be a large basketball pavilion, located in the center of the park. Last will come walking paths, turf, landscaping, irrigation, and a splash pad.
