The Cumby Lady Trojans hit the road Tuesday, looking to keep their hot start to the season going against Linden Kildare. The Lady Trojans have played very well so far this year, winning 12 of their first 15 games.

Cumby kept their trend going, blowing the Lady Tigers of Linden Kildare out by a final score of 61-20. “Our Lady Trojans have been working very hard and they are playing well together,” head coach Rocio Lopez said.

“We are proud of all their hard work and team work,” Lopez added. Macie Morales was the leading scorer for the Lady Trojans in their road blowout. Morales finished the game with 23 points and an impressive eight steals.

Behind her was Ashlyn Hudson who had a strong all-around game. Hudson had 14 points, as well as six rebounds and four steals. Neely Hammond had a great game, finishing with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling in 10 rebounds.

Cumby had a great week last week as well, as they hosted Trenton and Saltillo for a pair of home games. In their Tuesday game against Trenton, the Lady Trojans got off to a solid start, leading 21-11 at the end of the first half.

The Lady Trojans took their game up a notch in the second half, continuing to dominate in route to a 52-26 win. It was Hammond who led the way that time, putting up another double-double, with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Hudson was just behind her with 13 points and seven rebounds of her own. Azlyn Hornsby also had a strong contribution, pulling in an impressive nine rebounds and two steals.

Their Friday match against Saltillo was by far the closest match they’ve had recently, a trend that continued throughout the entire game. The two teams combined for just 10 points in the opening quarter, before the Lady Trojans took a 16-15 lead at the end of the first half.

The Saltillo Lady Lions took control of the game to open the second half, and even got out to a 33-28 lead entering the final frame. With their backs against the wall, Cumby was able to rally back, playing tight defense and creating points of their own, as they went on to win 46-39.

Hudson and Morales were the leading scorers with 10 points a piece. Hudson had six rebounds, while Morales dished out five assists and swiped four steals.

Lilly Campbell had a strong performance of her own, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Cumby returns to play Friday with a home game against Detroit.

The junior varsity girls will go first with a 5 p.m. tipoff, with the varsity set to follow. The Lady Trojans will be looking to improve their record to 14-3.
