The Sulphur Springs Wildcats had a very busy weekend, when they competed in the 2021 Spring Creek Classic. After falling just short to Atascocita, the No. 5 ranked team in 6A Thursday, the Wildcats bounced back later that night with another game against Arlington Seguin.

Sulphur Springs trailed 9-6 early, but Justin Haire gave the team a boost of momentum with a block. Parker Whisenhunt scored on a fast break on the other end, cutting their deficit to just one point.

Later in the first frame, Whisenhunt gave his team the lead, knocking down a wide open corner 3-pointer to put his team ahead 14-11. Haire followed on the next possession with a huge put back dunk, putting his team ahead by five points with 1:07 left in the quarter.

Sulphur Springs continued to be in control for the entire second quarter, never losing their lead. The Wildcats opened the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Branson Lynn and Cason Arrington, to extend their lead to 37-24. A 3-pointer later in the frame from Caleb Alexander gave the Wildcats their first 20-point lead of the game, as they went ahead 46-26.

Sulphur Springs was able to cruise for the remainder of the game, though they never let their foot off the gas. Needing a bounce back win after dropping their first game of the season, the Wildcats went on to win the game by a final score of 57-37.

The Wildcats resumed action Friday, with a game against Woodrow Wilson. The opening minutes were a back-and-forth affair, with the Woodrow Wilson defense giving Sulphur Springs a run for their money.

It wasn’t until the second quarter until the Wildcats began to create some separation, going on a run to get out to a 26-16 lead. Sulphur Springs kept their strong play going, extending their lead to 34-21 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats never looked back, continuing to dominate the game in the second half. Just a few minutes into the third quarter Sulphur Springs pushed their lead to 48-28, once again leading a game by 20 or more points.

Once again, Sulphur Springs never took their foot off the gas, continuing to score at an even higher rate in the final frame. After shooting a very efficient 56% from the field for the game, the Wildcats walked away with the 77-56 win.

The Wildcats had yet another game Friday evening, this time against A&M Consolidated. Sulphur Springs continued their strong play, this time winning the game by a final score of 68-59.

Sulphur Springs came back for one final game Saturday, this time against Frisco Liberty. The Redhawks from Liberty entered the game with a ton of momentum and a 10-1 record.

The Wildcats found themselves trailing early, as Liberty’s defense led to some early transition points. Doing their best to not get too far behind, Sulphur Springs quickly got down by 10 points, trailing 15-5 in the first few minutes.

Sulphur Springs didn’t let themselves get down for long, however, as they put together a very strong 13-2 run to regain their lead in the second quarter. Things stayed close for the remainder of the half, and the Wildcats found themselves down just 29-26 early in the third quarter.

Sulphur Springs almost started to fall behind, but worked their way back into it, once again cutting the deficit to three points, as they trailed 39-36 with 3:26 left in the frame. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Liberty was able to run away with things in the fourth quarter, creating a double-digit lead before winning the game 70-57.

The loss dropped the Wildcats record to 9-2, though they did play very well over the weekend. Sulphur Springs is back in action Tuesday night with yet another tough match, this time against 8-0 Royse City.

The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, in Sulphur Springs. Coverage of the game will be published on Front Porch News.
