Lady Eagles continue hot start, improve to 7-0

The Como-Pickton Lady Eagles played in the Union Grove tournament this weekend, looking to build to an already hot start to the year. After winning their first three games to open the season, the Lady Eagles were looking to see how long they could extend their streak.

Como-Pickton got the tournament started Thursday, with a game against McLeod. A 12-point second quarter helped lead the Lady Eagles to a 30-23 win, improving to 4-0 on the year. 

Cali Morris and Addi Monk paced the way, scoring nine points each. Mattison Buster added six points and six rebounds, while Chelsey Osborne had four points. Lauren Lewellen and Bella Romero each had three points.

Como-Pickton came back Friday to play a pair of games, starting with their 8:30 a.m. match against Quitman. The Lady Eagles got off to a great start, scoring 13 points in the opening frame and adding another 16 points in the second quarter. 

They created a ton of separation to start the second half, outscoring Quitman 11-2 in the third quarter, as they were able to cruise to a 45-37 victory. Buster led the way this time, scoring a game-high 16 points and pulling in a game-high seven rebounds. Behind her was Monk who had 14 points, six boards, four assists and a pair of steals.  Osborne had six points, while Morris, Kara Tifft and Romero each had three points.

The Lady Eagles weren’t done playing for the day, as they would take on Ore City just a few hours later. Como-Pickton got off to an amazing start, allowing just one point in the entire first half. The lady Eagles scored 18 points in the first quarter and 12 points in the second quarter, in route to a 46-18 win.

This time it was Morris who paced the way, dropping 14 points and five rebounds. Monk had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Romero was next with nine points.

Buster had six points and a pair of rebounds, while Osborne and Annie Franklin each had three points. Maggie Brown added a pair of assists and one still as well. 

The Lady Eagles came back Saturday for one final game, the championship game in the platinum bracket against Harleton. The two teams were neck-and-neck, with things all tied up at 22-22 at the end of the first half. 

Como-Pickton found themselves trailing after being outscored 10-3 in the third quarter, but did not let themselves get down. The Lady Eagles had an excellent fourth quarter, coming back to win the game by a final score of 19-8.

Morris came up huge for the Lady Eagles, scoring 17 points in the comeback win. Also finishing in double-digits was Osborne who had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. 

Also having a great game was Tifft, who had eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Monk and Romero had three points and Rhyane had two points, to go along with four rebounds. 

Como-Pickton had a great tournament, taking the championship and improving to 7-0 to start the year. Coverage of their Monday match against CHESS will be published Tuesday on Front Porch News.
